A memorable night in a historic house? A breathtaking view of the Mont? A stay in a charming hotel?
Don’t worry, you will find your ideal accommodation at Mont-Saint-Michel for an unforgettable stay. This is it:
- our advices to choose where to sleep at Mont-Saint-Michel (on the mount, at La Caserne, in the village…)
- and our selection of the best hotels in Mont-Saint-Michel
Our selection is made independently, based on our experience and research. When we stay in a hotel, we remain anonymous and pay in full.
Where to stay at Mont-Saint-Michel (and around)
Why spend a night at Mont-Saint-Michel (or around)
Because the Mont-Saint-Michel by day is impressive, but seeing it by night is magical!
It is really worth spending a night on the mountain, or not far from it, to take the time to admire a sunset and a sunrise, and also to stroll in the streets once the night falls(see our photos).
The crowds have left, and you can hear the wind in the stones whispering the secrets of this unique place.
Lodging on the mountain or staying around it?
The big question remains: is it better to stay on the mountain or around it?
What you need to know to visit the mountain:
- The parking lot is at a distance from Mont-Saint-Michel, you can’t get there by car
- The parking is not free, even for people sleeping on the mountain
- There are free shuttles between the parking lots and the mountain
- It is an exceptional and very touristy place. The closer you are to the mountain, the higher the prices
- the amount of rooms on the mountain is limited, so you have to book in advance, but this also means that the crowds leave, and the experience becomes more enjoyable.
If you can afford it and there is still room, we think it is worthwhile to sleep on the mountain.
But if you are looking for a hotel with more comfort and charm in the decoration, you have to look outside.
Map of options: where to stay at Mont-Saint-Michel
Here is a map that identifies the different areas where you can choose to stay in Mont-Saint-Michel. Right after I detail the advantages and disadvantages of each option:
Option 1 – On the Mount
The first option is of course to sleep on the mount itself.
It is a small village with narrow streets, an official village in France. So you can walk around at any time.
This is our preferred option. Of course, the accommodations are not exceptional (the old houses are small with lots of stairs), but the experience is unforgettable: the opportunity to walk around easily in the evening and early morning, and to see the bay from your room! No need to walk or take the shuttle.
We didn’t regret it!
Benefits
- Access to the medieval alleys when the crowds are gone
- Discovering the atmosphere of the mount at night
- Possibility to sleep in very old houses
- A unique experience!
Disadvantages
- Access to the accommodations through narrow, cobbled streets and stairs (bring a very small bag)
- Small rooms (on the whole) and limited comfort
- Very touristy and limited offer therefore high prices
- The ratings of the reviews are quite low, it can be scary. This is because people expect luxury and easy access. It’s a very old village on a rock, so be careful what you expect!
For example, the hotel Auberge Saint Pierre – see photos, prices and availability
or La Croix Blanche – see prices, photos and availability
Or see our article on the 7 hotels on the Mont-Saint-Michel
Option 2 – At La Caserne
The Barracks is an area between the parking lots and the mountain. There are various hotels, stores and restaurants.
Not much charm, but it’s a good compromise for those looking for a little more comfort or cheaper options.
You are still very close to the Mont, you don’t need to take the car: 15min by shuttle or 30min walk
Benefits
- Close to the Mont, access without car
- Easy access to hotels
- Larger rooms
- Best located to see the sunsets and sunrises on the mount (because located at a distance)
Disadvantages
- Less charm
- You still have to walk or take the shuttle to see the Mount
For example, the Mercure hotel with the nicest rooms – see photos, prices and availability
Or the hotel Relais Mont Saint Michel with view on the mount – see prices, photos and availability
Option 3 – Village of Beauvoir and surrounding area
Only 5 minutes by car from the Mont-Saint-Michel parking lots, you will find the village of Beauvoir and its surroundings.
There are a variety of accommodation options: B&B, guest houses, luxury hotel, mid-range hotel…
Benefits
- Not far from Mt.
- More variety of accommodations, some with charm
- Cheaper options
Disadvantages
- It is necessary to take the car or to walk much longer to reach the mount
For example, the luxury hotel L’Ermitage – see photos, prices and availability
Or the B&B LE Clos Saint Gilles, which was our favorite – see prices, photos and availability
Option 4 – In the countryside (less than 40min drive)
The Mont-Saint-Michel is at the border between Normandy and Brittany, 2 French regions.
The nearest towns are all small. There is a lot of countryside and forests.
In these green spaces you can find hotels, castles, guest houses…
Benefits
- Peace and quiet in the middle of nature
- Charming options and luxury
- Historic buildings
Disadvantages
- No more road to see the mountain
- Some do not have restaurants on site
For example, the hotel Château de la Ballue with its beautiful gardens – see photos, prices and availability
Or the hotel Château de Boucéel with its park – see prices, photos and availability
Or the Manoir de la Roche Torin with its view of the mountain – see prices, photos and availability
Option 5 – Avranches (25min drive)
If you prefer to stay in a larger town with a good choice of restaurants, Avranches is only 20 minutes away.
You will find there the Scriptorial museum of Mont-Saint-Michel, the ruins of a castle, a basilica and a park with a view on the mount.
Benefits
- Large city with all amenities
- Mount Royal Scriptorial Museum
Disadvantages
- No more road to see the mountain
For example, the hotel La Ramade – see photos, prices and availability
Where to see the best rated hotels in Avranches
Option 6 – Saint-Malo / Cancale / Dinard (less than 1 hour drive)
Many people like to combine a visit to Saint Malo with the Mont-Saint-Michel.
You can choose to sleep in the city of Saint Malo which also has a lot of charm: beautiful houses, a big beach and fortifications.
You will find all the amenities at less than 1 hour drive from the mountain.
The other seaside towns around are also worth considering: Cancale and Dinard
Benefits
- Beach
- Charming city
- Lots of restaurants and accommodations of all styles
Disadvantages
- No more road to reach Mt.
- Quite touristy, crowds
For example, the Château Hôtel du Colombier – see photos, prices and availability

- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).

1. Hotel Auberge Saint-Pierre (intramuros)
Why sleep at the Auberge Saint-Pierre?
The main building of the Auberge Saint-Pierre is in a half-timbered house from the 14th century. She has a lot of charm.
In the breakfast room, you don’t know where to look because it is so fascinating: the beams on the ceiling, the windows and their crosspieces, the fireplace or the half-timbered walls.
As with all hotels, expect to climb many steps to reach the rooms. Some of them also have charming beams but not all of them overlook the bay.
This is the hotel where you will have the most historical atmosphere. We loved the early breakfast in a magical atmosphere with the sound of the rain in the alley.

The Mercure hotel in Mont-Saint-Michel offers you everything you are used to finding in the hotels of the chain. We found the front desk staff very welcoming.
As the rooms do not have a view of the Mont-Saint-Michel, they opted for beautiful headboards with pictures of the mount and the abbey. The effect is very successful.

The rooms are accessible via the ramparts, with a maze-like feel to them that we loved.

They are all in the 3 star range and are quite expensive due to their unique location.
