Choosing the restaurant where you are going to eat during your visit to Mont-Saint-Michel is not easy. What makes the incredible beauty of the Mount also has its downside: the houses are cramped and not very suitable for catering, the visitors are numerous and the offer is necessarily limited.
But don’t worry, we propose you in this article some solutions and a selection of our best restaurants to eat well during your visit of the Mont-Saint-Michel.
At first, we searched the Mont-Saint-Michel area before exploring the restaurants of La Caserne and the village of Beauvoir, and then gradually moving away from them to find the best restaurants in the area (and there are plenty to choose from!).

Best atypical restaurant in Mont-Saint-Michel
1. Restaurant La mère Poulard
A true institution at Mont-Saint-Michel, the “Mère Poulard” is the oldest restaurant at Mont-Saint-Michel, opened in 1888! Installed at the entrance of the Mount, it is a must for your visit.
The Poulard mother is Anne Boutiaut, a maid who married a baker from Mont-Saint-Michel, Victor Poulard and opened in 1888, “A l’omelette renommée de la mère Poulard”. The legend was born!
The omelette de la mère Poulard, is a soufflé omelette with fresh eggs and salted butter from Normandy cooked over a wood fire. The “secret” of this dish lies in its uniform cooking obtained with the help of a pan with a long handle. The omelet can then be placed in the middle of the fire and removed just in time to keep it drooling and airy.
You can eat it with bacon, salmon, scallops or just vegetables. The rest of the menu offers more traditional dishes with some specialties from Normandy, but it would be a shame not to take advantage of this historic monument of French gastronomic culture.
Between the simple culinary pleasure of an omelette and the experience of seeing a wood-fired cooking whose recipe is mythical, this is for us the best restaurant in Mont-Saint-Michel intra-muros.

Best restaurants to eat healthy and cheap
When you are on the Mont-Saint-Michel, you are in Normandy and this point is indisputable (word of Normand!!!). But you are not too far from Brittany and its traditional creperies.
Also, if you want to be sure to eat healthy and for a reasonable budget we advise you :
2. Creperie La sirène
As you begin your ascent of the Mont, on your left in the main street, you will find on the second floor of a souvenir store, a good little creperie, La Sirène.
As the room is not huge, we recommend you to arrive early (service starts at 11:45 am), or to be patient. You will have the opportunity to see the crepe maker at work during your meal, the assurance that everything is home-made in this restaurant.
You will surely find your pleasure in the twenty or so choices of patties with buckwheat (I love the “light” Normande: andouille de Vire, cooked apples, Pont l’évêque and cream!) and among the 25 dessert pancakesFrom the most classic (butter, sugar, chocolate…) to the most gourmet (to balance geographically, let’s mention the Breizh: apples, almonds, salted butter caramel cream and sweet cream).
The bill is quite reasonable for the Mont-Saint-Michel, a real good address for a cheap and healthy lunch!
Practical information:
- Neighborhood: intramural
- Type: pancake house
- Capacity: less than 25 covers
- Price range: 20-40 €.
- Terrace: no
- Bay view: no
- Specialty of Normandy: yes
- Particularly suitable for children: yes
- See the news of the restaurant
3. Creperie La Cloche
Still in the main street, but a little higher up, still on your left, you will find the Creperie La Cloche. This restaurant is run by an authentic Montois (inhabitant of Mont-Saint-Michel) whose family has lived on the Mont since 1663.
Depending on your arrival time (service starts at noon) and your luck, you can have lunch in the room upstairs or, with a smaller menu and less comfort, on the first floor.
The menu is very classic, but the products are fresh and the cakes are of high quality. Before ordering, we invite you to look at thechef’s slate , which sometimes offers more elaborate dishes.
Here again the bill is totally controlled to allow you to eat without ruining yourself while staying on the Mont-Saint-Michel.
Practical information:
- Neighborhood: intramural
- Type: pancake house
- Capacity: less than 25 covers
- Price range: -20
- Terrace: no
- Bay view: no
- Specialty of Normandy: no
- Particularly suitable for children: yes
A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE AT Mont-Saint-Michel
Step 1: Plan and get there
Step 3: decide where to sleep
Best restaurant for dinner
If, like us, you had the good idea to spend a night on the Mount and enjoy this exceptional place in the silence and the night lights, it is preferable to dine there. There is a table which, according to us (and according to some Montois who slipped it to us with the ear…), offers at the same time a pleasant framework and a chart which fully develops the beautiful products of the soil!
4. The Restaurant of the Hotel du Guesclin
Located 100 meters from the entrance, in the first turn of the main street, the restaurant of the Hotel Du Guesclin is certainly the best traditional restaurant of the Mont.
One of the dining rooms is on the ramparts side and offers a breathtaking view of the bay. If the tide times are with you, the show will be as much in front of your eyes, as in your plate! The second one on the first floor will plunge you into a medieval atmosphere.
2 menus to choose from are (very) good products and local recipes. From hollow oysters to chicken with Auge Valley sauce, not forgetting the salad with hot camembert.
And if you want to be even more local, opt for the traditional and melting leg of Roast Salt Meadow Lamb and finish with an Apple-Calvados dessert!
On the menu, the choice is even wider with a beautiful variation on lamb that left us hesitant and salivating… The prices are still quite reasonable considering the quality of the meal and the incredible view.
The only negative point (and one to watch out for) is that the restaurant is only open in the evening from Friday to Tuesday evenings. We advise you to arrive fairly early (service starts at 6.30pm and finishes at 8.30pm), if you want to stand a chance of getting a table or, better still, make a reservation (but, last time I checked, reservations are only open to people staying at their hotel).

The inns and restaurants on Mont-Saint-Michel
A great place of pilgrimage for nearly 1000 years, the village has kept a tradition of welcome, the inhabitants offering lodging and food to pilgrims. Numerous medieval hostelries bear witness to this past and have naturally become, since tourists have mostly replaced pilgrims, inns and restaurants that can welcome you for a meal, but which are especially worth seeing for their historical setting.
5. Auberge Saint-Pierre
Located at the beginning of the Grande Rue, it is one of the rare restaurants of the Mont-Saint-Michel open quite late in the evening (until 9 pm) and every day of the week. The building is classified as a historical monument.
In a rustic atmosphere (exposed stones, Norman cupboard, wood and terracotta floor), you will be able to spend a decent dinner.
The brasserie-style menu is quite classic and offers 3 levels of menu depending on appetite and budget.
The main originality is a Blue Lobster formula that you can choose in the restaurant’s fish tank. It is cooked with bisque and preceded by oysters or foie gras.
For dessert, we stayed with the great popular classics and opted for the crepe suzette!

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.
Best take-out restaurant
If you want to eat on the go without wasting time, you can opt for take-out. Just keep in mind that there is no real place to rest and you will probably have to eat your meal while walking. If you brought your own picnic, plan to eat it at the Barracks, near the parking lots. Our favorite take-out restaurant on the Mount:
8. Takeaway restaurant La coquille
This is one of the latest products of the Mère Poulard group, which we mentioned at the top of the article.
Located on the main street, in the bend on the right, this small and bright restaurant offers sandwiches, patties and also panini at any time of the day. For dessert, we fell in love with their (small) blueberry muffins…
Important point, the sandwiches and cakes are prepared on the spot on demand, the insurance to have fresh products.
Prices are reasonable for Mont-Saint-Michel.
Practical information:
- Location: intramural
- Type: takeaway
- Capacity : 0 seats
- Terrace : no
- View on the bay : no (unless you find a place on the ramparts of course…)

The best restaurants in La Caserne and the village
Along the Couesnon, near the parking lots and the shuttle bus, several restaurants have taken place in the area called La Caserne. And at only 5min by car, you will also find the small village of Beauvoir with more options. Our favorites:
9. Restaurant La table de l’Ermitage in Beauvoir village
We enjoyed our stay in what would be the smallest 5 star hotel in Europe, housed in a beautiful former post office. After the crowds at Mont-Saint-Michel, a moment of calm in a hotel that plays with volumes. The infinitely large (rooms) in the infinitely small (hotel)…
The restaurant is like the hotel, comfortable without being ostentatious. Chef Didier Gadois cooks withfresh and seasonal products, selecting the best suppliers whether they are at the nearby Begossière farm, or at a prestigious Parisian address (Maison Kaviari for salmon and caviar).
The menu smells of family recipes and generosity. A true Norman cuisine as we like it and as we were raised! You will find of course thelamb of the Pré Salé, but also a large choice of seafood , all accompanied by the good Norman creameryproducts (butter of Isigny, Pont Lévèque and Livarot of the farm of Plessis…).
Please note that the restaurant is only open in the evening and we strongly recommend that you make reservations.

10. Restaurant La ferme Saint-Michel at the barracks
Located in an old farm in the polders where the level is lower than that of the nearby sea, the restaurant La Ferme Saint Michel proposes to make you discover the best of the local products.
You can taste the best selections of meats, including the traditional Agneau du Pré Salé. We accompany the whole of small vegetables of the close market gardeners and we do not derogate from the breaded camembert with the raw milk. An authentic farm meal!
Please note that the restaurant offers farm baskets every morning before 10am, for visitors wishing to try a picnic on the mountain (or on one of the picnic tables available at the Barracks).

Restaurants near Mont-Saint-Michel
If you move away from the Mont-Saint-Michel, you will be able to find beautiful tables, the region being particularly greedy and rich in good local products. Our 2 favorite restaurants near the Mont-Saint-Michel.
11. The restaurant Le Gué du Holme
25 minutes by car from Mont-Saint-Michel, on your way back to Avranche, make a gourmet stop at the hotel-restaurant Le Gué du Holme.
The deep blue and gold decoration is warm, elegant without being flashy. The restaurant room is bright and on sunny days you can opt for the terrace overlooking the garden of this nice little family hotel.
The classics of the Normandy region are worked on to bring out their identity, their taste signature. The cod fillet will just be enhanced with a seaweed mustard while the veal medallion will be topped with a tarragon sauce.
The dishes are nicely presented, we feel the application of the chef Dany PIGNOT who selects with great care all these suppliers as close as possible to the restaurant.
Although we are not in a wine region, the wine list is very correct, with a small (and understandable) penchant for Burgundy.
The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the meal and, more generally, the restaurant. Even if the Mont-Saint-Michel is extraordinary, it may be necessary to travel a few kilometers…

12. Restaurant Le Coquillage (2 stars)
If you really want to live an extraordinary gastronomic moment and extend the mystical experience of the Mont-Saint-Michel, head for Cancale (45 minutes drive) and the restaurant Le Coquillage.
Cancale is the town that closes the bay and offers an exceptional view on the Mont-Saint-Michel. Seeing the silhouette of the abbey, shrouded in mist that seems to fly over the water, is just magical. In any case, we do not get tired of it…
And in this maritime city, hides one of the most beautiful French tables, according to us, the restaurant Le Coquillage of the young chef Hugo Roellinger. Olivier Roellinger’s son took over the family table in 2014 and cultivates the same love of seafood, spices and aromatic herbs that are the family signature.
Everything is perfect, magical, and you will dream, like us, of settling permanently in this beautiful bourgeois house overlooking the bay…

Other restaurants to eat healthy and cheap
- Restaurant Créperie du Couesnon: in the nice village of Pontorson, about fifteen minutes from the Mont-Saint-Michel parking lots, a traditional Breton creperie with delicious pancakes and crepes… The quality-price ratio is among the best in Mont-Saint-Michel!
Other restaurants in La Caserne
- Restaurant Le Pré-salé: an elegant and contemporary decoration in a large and bright room. The menu offers a wide choice of classic French cuisine, but always prepared with a small surprise ingredient that gives character to the proposed cuisine. The beef entrecote will be topped with a camembert sauce while the dressing of the lobster salad will be with passion fruit. Discover the map
