Sleeping on the Mont-Saint-Michel, is it worth it?
Why spend a night on the Mont-Saint-Michel
To be honest, we were skeptical before spending the night at Mont-Saint-Michel. The ratings of the hotels within the city are not excellent and we wondered if it was really worth it since you can’t see the mountain when you sleep on it…
Well, our answer is YES, absolutely.
The hotels are quite decent, with nice rooms. It is easy to walk 200m on the footbridge to appreciate the Mount at night. And walking in these narrow streets when everyone else is gone is magical.
Between the historical side, or the impression of being in a Harry Potter story, everyone finds something to do!
We have absolutely no regrets.
We’ll tell you more about them later, but here’s a list of the 7 hotels in order as you go up the street (over 200m):

Video night at Mont-Saint-Michel
Here is a short video to give you an idea of what you might enjoy. Unfortunately, we didn’t always think to film everything. But it’s a good introduction:
Why not stay for your entire vacation
We recommend spending one night on the Mont-Saint-Michel (see 2) but not more. This is not a good base for your vacation in the area.
To reach your car, you have to walk or take a shuttle. There are many people during the day etc.
The Mount can be visited very well in 1 to 2 days.
The reality of sleeping on the Mount – and why hotel ratings are low
After seeing a couple complain to an employee on Mont-Saint-Michel, and hearing the type of complaints, I understand better why the grades are low when it is not deserved.
You can’t have the same expectations as for a classic hotel!
The village was built on a small rocky island several centuries ago, which is what makes its charm.
But it also implies:
- The streets are very steep, and there are many stairs
- The houses are small and have small rooms
- It is a labyrinth
- You can’t have a view of the Mount, since you are on top of it!!!
- …
But people complain about the difficulty of access to the rooms, the size of the rooms…
Be realistic and adjust your expectations!
Note that:
- not all rooms have a bay view
- the least expensive rooms in each hotel are less renovated, less large or without a view
- rooms under the roof will have smaller windows
- The rooms are scattered in different houses (which are not above the reception…)
- Most of them do not have air conditioning!
- The wi-fi is not excellent…
- and the prices are high because the place is unique

Hotels on the Mont-Saint-Michel
We confirm that we are talking about the hotels on the island. Be careful because some articles list hotels outside the island as being on top…
All hotel receptions are located along the main street.
In the low season, some receptions are grouped together in one place.
We’ll tell you more about them later, but first, here’s a list of the 7 hotels in order as you go up the street (over 200m):
- Hotel La Mère Poulard
– see prices, pictures and availability - Hotel Les Terrasses Poulard
– see prices, pictures and availability - Auberge Saint-Pierre Hotel

– see prices, pictures and availability - Hotel Le Du Guesclin
– see prices, pictures and availability - Hotel Le Mouton Blanc
– see prices, pictures and availability - Hotel La Vielle Auberge

It is a very touristic place, think to book early enough to have the choice and the best prices.

The alternatives near Mont-Saint-Michel
Of course, there are also many accommodation options around Mont Saint-Michel:
- at the Caserne, at the end of the bridge – like the Mercure or the Relais du Mont-Saint-Michel with a view of the mountain
- in the surrounding villages and countryside with B&Bs, chambres d’hôtes and chateaux – allow 10 to 30 minutes drive to reach the parking lots on the mountain (e.g. the Clos Saint Gilles or the Château de La Ballue)

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.
Essentials for an unusual night at Mont-Saint-Michel
Choose according to the tides
Sleeping on the Mont Saint-Michel is impressive whatever the conditions.
But it is true that it is even better when the tides are strong and you can see the water rising around the island. So, if you have a choice of when to visit, watch the tidal coefficients.
Choose a room with a view of the Bay
If you can afford them, I recommend getting a room with a view of the Bay. Sit back and listen to the quiet when evening comes, observe this flat expanse, and the truly unusual rock built in the middle of the Bay.
And if you have chosen well with the tides, you will be able to see quietly from your room the landscape change.
Take only a small bag
Hotels will advise you in an email, but many people don’t take the time to read them. So we warn you here, do not bring a big suitcase! (or even worse, 2… we saw a couple with 2 suitcases each!!!).
You will have to: take a shuttle, walk on cobblestone streets and climb a lot of stairs sometimes narrow… leave your suitcase in your car and bring only what you need for the night!
If you are not driving, there is a luggage drop-off point in the tourist office near the parking lots.
Parking code P3
For the people who sleep on the Mont-Saint-Michel (within the walls), there is a dedicated parking: the P3. But you need a code to be allowed in. Contact your hotel one day before by phone or email to get the code.
Shoes
We’re going to repeat ourselves again, but there are a lot of cobblestones and steps. Choose shoes that are comfortable to walk in and stable.
Watch the weather
You are by the sea. The weather can change quite quickly. Pack everything you need for your stay. And even if it is hot during the day, it can be cool in the evening!
A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE AT Mont-Saint-Michel
Step 1: Plan and get there
Step 3: decide where to sleep
1. Hotel L’Auberge Saint-Pierre
Why sleep at the Auberge Saint-Pierre?
The main building of the Auberge Saint-Pierre is in a half-timbered house from the 14th century. She has a lot of charm.
In the breakfast room, you don’t know where to look because it is so fascinating: the beams on the ceiling, the windows and their crosspieces, the fireplace or the half-timbered walls.
As with all hotels, expect to climb many steps to reach the rooms. Some of them also have charming beams but not all of them overlook the bay.
This is the hotel where you will have the most historical atmosphere. We loved the early breakfast in a magical atmosphere with the sound of the rain in the alley.

2. Hotel La Croix Blanche
Why stay at the hotel La Croix Blanche?
La Croix Blanche is a hotel nestled between the main street and the ramparts.
It is known for its stone-walled restaurant and its terrace.
The rooms are accessible via the ramparts, with a maze-like feel to them that we loved.
In low season, the reception is at the Auberge Saint Pierre.
Some of the 9 rooms have a sea view.
We also really liked the view of the restaurant from the spiral staircase from the rooms…

- Price range: 3 stars

- Family rooms: yes

Why stay at the hotel Les Terrasses Poulard?
The famous Mère Poulard has 2 hotels, the one above the restaurant (number 6) and the Terrasses Poulard.
This one is separated in different buildings.
This hotel is for those looking for a more modern setting in this historic village.
The most beautiful rooms are in the Hermitage annex. They are among the largest on the island with views of the village houses and the Bay.
But of course, to have such a view, you have to climb a lot of stairs…
We were a little exhausted when we arrived, but those big windows and the view were worth it!
Practical information
- Price range: 3 stars
- Restaurant: yes, close by
- Family rooms: yes
- free wifi
- See photos, prices and availability – and book!
4. Hotel Le Mouton Blanc

You can choose according to the experience you are looking for: one building offers medieval style rooms while the other one offers rooms with a view on the bay.
At the bottom of the main building, is the restaurant with the same name. They serve local Noman food with seafood, cheeses and more.

5. Hotel La Vieille Auberge
Why stay at the Vieille Auberge Hotel?
This hotel is separated in 2 buildings.
In the first building, you will have standard rooms overlooking the main street. This is for those with a smaller budget.
But if you can, the rooms in the other building with sea view offer you terraces and balconies with breathtaking views.
This is the right option for you if having an exterior is essential. This is rare on the island.
But again, to get this view, you have to climb a lot of steps.
We really liked the terrace. But with all the alleys we had to explore, we didn’t enjoy it as much as we would have liked.
Practical information
- Price range: 2 stars
- Restaurant : yes
- Family rooms: yes
- free wifi
- See photos, prices and availability – and book!
6. Hotel La Mère Poulard
Why stay at the Hotel La Mère Poulard?
La Mère Poulard is the most famous place on the mountain after the abbey. This is due to its restaurant and its famous omelet inflator on a wood fire.
But it’s not just a restaurant. Above these famous red doors, you can access the rooms by a magnificent historical staircase.
And some of these rooms have a view of the bay. We particularly appreciated the brightness.
The other rooms in the back building overlook the garden which also has a lot of charm.
If you eat out, don’t just taste the omelet, watch them cook it!
This hotel is located at the very bottom of the mountain, so you just have the steps in the building to reach the rooms.

7. Duguesclin Hotel
Why stay at the Duguesclin Hotel?
The hotel has 10 rooms with bay view or village view.
It is combined with a restaurant that also offers beautiful views.
Unfortunately we could not test it because it was closed during our last visit.

Sleeping near the Mont-Saint-Michel
The experience of sleeping on the Mount is truly unique. But if you can’t afford it or if you can’t find any more rooms, you can still come and walk around Mont at night.
It stays open 24 hours. Access on foot is always feasible. And the shuttles run from 7:30 am to midnight
In this case, see our article Where to sleep near the Mont-Saint-Michel.
We had a crush on the Clos Saint Gilles guest rooms – see prices, photos and availability.
