Where to stay in Bayeux: best hotels and neighborhoods
Why spend one or more nights in Bayeux (and surroundings)
Often called the “medieval city at the gates of the D-Day beaches”, Bayeux is a city full of surprises. You will find many museums, a medieval architecture preserved with a real Norman style between land and sea! City of art and culture, Bayeux is home to the famous tapestry classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, woven in its majestic cathedral.
Bayeux is a great place to live. It is one of the cities of 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants where quality of life is paramount. Culture, history, art, gastronomy and… botany! Indeed, the Botanical Garden of Bayeux located on the road to Port en Bessin is a classified natural site, one of the most beautiful landscape parks of the 19th century in Normandy!

The advantage of sleeping in Bayeux itself? Easy access to most of the tourist attractions in a short time while discovering this medieval city at the gateway to the D-Day beaches.
We invite you to read the presentation of the neighborhoods we recommend if you wish to stay in Bayeux:
- The historic heart of Bayeux or Old Bayeux: the district of the museums and the cathedral, very lively with several shops and a nice offer of restaurants.
- Quartier Saint-Laurent Saint-Jean: the district not far from the heart of the city quite animated.
- South Side / Train Station: the more residential area with a little more open space close to nature and downtown.
Are you more of a countryside person? In the vicinity of Bayeux, we have found a few pearls to stay, an unforgettable moment in the middle of the great expanses while breathing a pure air.
Finally, the sea is only 10 kilometers away from Bayeux! If you prefer to smell the iodine when you get up in the morning and hear the sound of seagulls before visiting the wonders of Bayeux, we have some suggestions for you as well.
Option 1 – In the historic core
During the day or in the evening, the historic heart or Old Bayeux seduces with its cobbled streets and its traditional Norman half-timbered houses. If you choose to spend one or more nights in this area to admire one of the historical wonders of the city such as the Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral illuminated at night, here is our selection of accommodations:
- Hotel Lion d’Or: a 3 star hotel in a former 18th century post office and its gastronomic table – see photos, prices and availability – and book!
- Hotel Reine Mathilde: a traditional 2 star hotel close to tourist attractions and very good restaurants in the adjacent street – see photos, prices and availability – and book!

The medieval countryside of Normandy is full of beautiful places, some of them well hidden and little known. Located in a 700 year old estate, this magical place has kept all its authenticity with stone walls and exposed beams – see photos, prices, availability – and book!
Option 5 – By the sea
It is not for nothing that Bayeux is called the gateway to the D-Day landing beaches. Less than 20 minutes by car, we found ourselves facing the sea. If you like the sound of the waves and the coastal charm, you can spend one or more nights at the Villas d’Arromanches in Arromanches-les-Bains. This stone building dates from the 19th century and is located only 200 meters from the D-Day beaches – see photos, prices and availability – and book!
