The best hotels in Cherbourg
The hotel offer is somewhat limited in Cherbourg, but these establishments do well in our eyes:
Luxury hotel: Hotel Mercure Cherbourg Centre Port
When you’re in Cherbourg, treat yourself to a view of one of Europe’s largest ports by opting for a top-of-the-range room at the Hôtel Mercure! Did you know that it was in this port city that the ocean liner Titanic made its last stop before sinking? Despite its proximity to the city center, your room will be very well soundproofed. You’ll be close to all amenities and just a 15-minute walk from the famous Cité de la Mer, which won us over!

Hotel near the Basilica: Hôtel Le Cercle
Would you like to spend the night right next to one of Cherbourg’s oldest and most important monuments, the Basilique Sainte-Trinité? This is the experience offered by Hôtel Le Cercle in Cherbourg. We liked the modern, well-equipped rooms. A cosy setting for this charming establishment in the historic center. The ideal place to set down your bags before exploring the city!

Where to stay in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin: best districts
Why stay in Cherbourg?
The Cotentin Peninsula, a region of wilderness and contrasting landscapes in the heart of Normandy. Did you know that Cherbourg, its main town, was the inspiration for Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, a romantic film released in 1963 and directed by French screenwriter Jacques Demy?
Today, the main attraction is “La Cité de la Mer”, a vast museum dedicated to the ocean, offering an immersive experience with its submarines and exploration of marine life. A must-see place that we particularly enjoyed visiting! Cherbourg is also a good starting point for visiting the D-Day Beaches, one of Normandy’s not-to-be-missed excursions – see other options here.
In our opinion, Cherbourg is the ideal starting point for exploring the Cotentin region, its châteaux with their superb gardens, and its coastline with its diverse landscapes. The village of Barfleur and the Gatteville lighthouse are just a 35-minute drive away. Marvel at the majestic cliffs, sandy beaches and rock formations (some of which are the oldest rocks in France).
It’s one of the most popular places to stay in Normandy!
Staying in downtown Cherbourg
The historic heart of Cherbourg offers an authentic yet lively atmosphere. We enjoyed the proximity of Cherbourg’s historic monuments, its narrow streets, its gourmet restaurants and its cultural life. It’s a good neighborhood for experiencing both museums and historic buildings, without being too far from the port or Cité de la Mer.

- Proximity to cultural venues (Thomas Henry Art Museum or Musée du Parapluie)
- Numerous shops and good places to eat in Cherbourg

Stay with a view of Cherbourg harbour
Did you know that the Port of Cherbourg is one of the largest in Europe? We enjoyed wandering around and admiring the wide variety of ships on display. For a breath of fresh air, head for the Michel Legrand footbridge and let yourself be guided along the river. Finally, you’ll probably be as impressed as we are by Cherbourg’s artificial harbour, the largest in Europe!
Benefits:
- Close to La Cité de la Mer (Cherbourg Aquarium) – book your ticket
- Beautiful views of the port and sunset (color and images guaranteed!)

Staying on the outskirts of Cherbourg to the west
If you’d prefer to opt for peace and quiet and recharge your batteries during your stay in the Cotentin while remaining based close to Cherbourg, we think the western suburbs are a good alternative. We appreciated the natural setting, with more greenery, especially the Parc Emmanuel Liais, classified as a remarkable garden. Parking is easier and accommodation more affordable, all just a few minutes’ drive from Cherbourg.
Benefits:
- Peace and quiet
- Close to nature (gardens and hiking trails, such as Parc Emmanuel Liais)
- More attractive accommodation rates
- Easier parking
- Lower tourist numbers
- Practical for visiting magnificent landscapes such as the Nez de Jobourg
- Close to the Cherbourg naval base or Arsenal
Disadvantages:
- Distance from downtown (15 to 20 minutes by car)
- Less choice of accommodation
- few shops and restaurants
Our favorite hotels:
- Hotel Shelder (3 stars) – see photos and availability
Other useful tips to keep in mind
- Cherbourg is a good base for visiting the Cotentin region, so we strongly advise you to book your accommodation in advance. Indeed, the choice is limited and the number of visitors fluctuates according to the season. For example, many races, nautical events and music festivals take place in spring and summer, helping to boost tourist numbers.
- It’s often said that in Normandy, the sun shines several times a day, whatever the season! Make sure you bring appropriate clothing, as the weather can be changeable. Especially if you’re planning a hike in the area.
- We were also seduced by the architectural richness of the Cotentin region! In fact, like us, you’ll have the chance to visit some very fine abbeys, including Hambye Abbey, La Lucerne Abbey and Cerisy-la-Forêt! And don’t forget to marvel at some of the castles, such as Château de Pirou or Château de Gratot a little further down the road. To discover these unique places, you’ll need a car to get around easily and at your own pace. Discover the best offers for car rental in Cherbourg and our useful tips here.
- The town is also known for one of the historic episodes of the Battle of Normandy: the Battle of Cherbourg. The liberation of the port city on June 26 1944 marked a turning point in the 2nd World War. D-Day commemoration events are organized in Cherbourg every year. Read our article on the 80th anniversary of D-Day and find out more about our selection of events here.

- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
