Short answer
These two historic towns in Normandy each offer a unique but distinct experience.
Rouen seduced us with its exceptional architectural heritage, its medieval streets and its inseparable link with Joan of Arc. The town also offers a rich cultural and gastronomic offering.
On the other hand, Caen fascinated us with its history linked to the D-Day landings and to William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England in the Middle Ages. You’ll also discover a pleasant living environment with its green spaces and contemporary dynamism.

Access + Location to explore the region
The 2 towns are located in Normandy, but in different strategic positions for exploring the region.
Rouen is located in the eastern part of Normandy, closer to Paris and the Côte d’Albâtre, while Caen is centrally located for easy access to the D-Day landing beaches.
Here are a few guidelines to help you make the right assessment:
- Rouen to Caen = 1h50 drive
- Rouen to Paris = 1h45 drive
- Caen to Bayeux = 35min drive
- Caen to the D-Day landing beaches = 30 to 40min drive
Note that access by train from Paris remains the preferred option for both destinations.

- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.

The Hôtel de Bourgtheroulde particularly appealed to us for its exceptional setting in a former 16th-century mansion. We also appreciate the originality of the Hôtel Littéraire, with its references to Gustave Flaubert.

Easy to get around these cities
Getting around Rouen
Rouen is easily discovered on foot in its historic center. We recommend parking on the outskirts of the town and walking to fully appreciate the architecture of the medieval streets. The city also boasts an efficient public transport network.

Getting around Caen
Caen has a larger city center, but is still within walking distance. We particularly appreciate the green spaces that dot the city and provide pleasant breaks during visits. The tramway network facilitates travel to more distant neighborhoods.

Our review
Both cities are easy to visit on foot, which we really appreciate when we travel! Rouen charmed us with its concentration of monuments, Caen with its green spaces and modern transport!
Can we visit Rouen and Caen on the same trip?
The two towns are very close.
By car: 1h30min drive.
By train: 1h45min, regular service several times a day.
So it’s perfectly possible to visit both towns in the same Normandy holiday. We even recommend this combination for a complete discovery of Normandy’s heritage.
And why not other cities/regions?
