Above the famous restaurant l’Auberge de la Mère Poulard, you can choose to sleep facing the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel in a historic building.
In this article, we propose you a return in images on our experience in the hotel with our opinion and all the practical information for you also, to relax in this beautiful hotel!
This review is completely independent, we went anonymously and paid our bill in full.
Also note, that the experience can vary a lot depending on the room you have because the hotel is not completely redone.
Why stay at the hotel La Mère Poulard
Among the hotel offer of the Mont-Saint-Michel, the hotel La Mère Poulard is an institution for several reasons:
- For its varied views
With 27 rooms, the Mère Poulard hotel offers rooms for all tastes: either on the mother, or on the garden, or on the abbey…
The bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is really a fascinating environment, ultra-flat, where we find the biggest tides of Europe.
- For the story and the omelet
Installed since 1888 on the Mont, the Mère Poulard inn is an obligatory step of a visit of the Mont-Saint-Michel, it is an integral part of the heritage. It would be like visiting Paris without passing the Eiffel Tower!
The restaurant is located on the first floor of the hotel. The omelettes are always cooked on a wood fire in front of you!
- For the location right at the entrance
The hotel is the first to appear along the main street, just past the huge gates of the fortifications.
Compared to other hotels on the mountain, there are a few less stairs to reach many rooms. For those who have mobility difficulties, this is surely one of your best options.
But, even if it is one of the most accessible, as for all the hotels within the city, the access is not easy (shuttle + steps on cobblestones + stairs). It is therefore better to come with a small bag to carry your things.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.
Is the hotel La Mère Poulard worth it? Our review
Whatever the hotel, spending the night on the Mont-Saint-Michel, intramuros, is a unique experience.
Even if the hotels are a little less luxurious and more expensive than all around the bay ( see all options), the adventure is exceptional. Walking through the medieval streets at night, once the crowds have gone, is like a trip back in time (or a Harry Potter adventure…).
There are 7 hotels in the village. See our article to help you choose.
Decoration and atmosphere
The lower part of the main building looks great. The red of the inn is frequently used and the large windows bring a lot of light.
Along the staircase you can see the autographs of many celebrities who have come to eat or stay here.
But the buildings are historic and are getting very old. Be aware of this when you book.
Our rooms were in the main building above the restaurant.
And the others were in the back around the garden. We see the access on our photo below:
The rooms
Here are the pictures of the 2 rooms we experienced.
In both cases they were very bright because the windows are large.
The room with the red decorations is the most iconic, the one that is pictured everywhere, and it is true that it looks great.
The second room (pictured below) was less stylish but still nice with the view on the bay.
However, you should know that not all the rooms have been redone… The comments on the Internet therefore vary greatly, and we understand that.

The bathroom
We only took pictures of one of the two bathrooms. I’m sorry.
As with all intramural housing, it was not very large. This is normal given the age of the buildings.
But it was functional. No worries.
A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE AT Mont-Saint-Michel
Step 1: Plan and get there
Step 3: decide where to sleep
History
Built by Victor and Annette Poulard in 1888, the building that still houses the restaurant, but also the piano bar and the 27-room hotel is located just at the entrance of Mont-Saint-Michel, at the beginning of the famous Grande Rue.
At the time, it distinguished itself from the competition by offering individual tables for lunch or dinner.
Restaurant
The emblematic dish of the auberge de la mère Poulard is the omelette.
And in the restaurant, you can watch them cracking local eggs, preparing the mixtures and cooking them over a wood fire!
Learn more about our omelet tasting.
The breakfast
The breakfast is in the form of buffet with: cold cuts, cheese, pastries, breads. It is not the most varied and qualitative.
We strongly advise you to take it early enough for more choices on the buffet, and for a more interesting atmosphere while walking in the streets afterwards. The magic of Mont-Saint-Michel waking up.
Please note that coffee is served by a hot beverage dispenser. If you like good coffee, skip it.

THE SAME MISTAKE WE MADE
On one of our last trips to Europe, a hacker stole our credit card details while we were using a hotel WiFi.
So our trip began with a “card blocked” call… Not funny at all!

Our top 3 things to do at Mont-Saint-Michel
Walk to the mount
Many people rush inside the Mont. They get out of their car, get on the shuttle and follow the people inside. But, in our opinion, choosing to walk there from the parking lots is the best option.
The path is flat and easy. Count 40min to 50min of walking.
Enjoy the sea air and the changing landscape as you approach the mountain; with the dam, fields, sand…
The anticipation makes the experience even better!
Visit the Abbey
The jewel of Mont-Saint-Michel is of course the abbey built over the centuries on top of this rocky island.
It is a marvel of architecture and history.
It is particularly known for its cloister built in the 13th century, as if suspended between sky and sea.
Be careful, there are a lot of stairs to visit it.
And you have to book your visit before – bookhere

Explore the ramparts
In addition to the main street and the abbey, do not miss the ramparts.
We recommend that when you arrive at Mont-Saint-Michel, you go up to the abbey by the ramparts and come back down by the main street or other alleys.
Going up the covered way offers you views of the village, the roofs, the abbey and the bay. Probably our favorite part of the visit to the Mont outside the abbey.
