Is Lisieux worth a visit?
Lisieux is well worth a visit. A major pilgrimage site dedicated to Saint Therese, it boasts a rich religious heritage, dominated by its imposing Romanesque-Byzantine basilica and its Gothic cathedral, which has been preserved from bombardment. We were touched by the atmosphere of contemplation that pervades this Norman city with its medieval past.
It is one of the most important spiritual cities in Normandy.
1. Marvel at the Basilica of Saint Theresa

The majestic Basilica of Saint Theresa impressed us deeply with its imposing and elegant Romanesque-Byzantine architecture. Built in the 20th century as a tribute to the saint from Lisieux, it dominates the town with its distinctive silhouette. We took time to admire its grandiose proportions and luminous mosaics, which tell the story of the life of “Little Therese”. The atmosphere of contemplation that reigns under the great dome will transport you, whether you’re a believer or not.

2. Discover Saint-Pierre Cathedral

In the heart of the historic center, we appreciated the sober beauty of St. Peter’s Cathedral. This jewel of Norman Gothic architecture miraculously survived the 1944 bombing raids that ravaged the town. The building’s austere elegance is typical of Norman Gothic. Inside, soft light filters through the stained glass windows. It was here that the young Thérèse regularly came to meditate before entering the Carmelite Order. The cathedral is also a precious witness to medieval Lisieux.

3. Stroll through the Jardin de l’Évêché

Located just behind the cathedral, the Jardin de l’Évêché offered us a moment of relaxation in the heart of the historic center. We enjoyed the tranquil setting, with its well-manicured lawns, century-old trees and flowerbeds. The view of the rear of the bishop’s palace adds a touch of heritage to this nature break.
- Opening hours: open all day

- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Remember to take outcomprehensive insurance (some roads are winding and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.

4. Admire half-timbered houses

Don’t miss the half-timbered houses, particularly those on Rue Henry Chéron (but there are others scattered around the town). We were charmed by their carefully restored facades, which miraculously survived the destruction of the Second World War. These architectural remains add undeniable charm to the town center, which was largely rebuilt in the post-war years.
5. Find Manoir Desmares

As we turned a corner, we spotted this remarkable manor house. It is one of the last remaining examples of medieval civil architecture in Lisieux. Although this 15th-century building is privately owned, we were able to admire it from the public highway. The meticulous woodwork reveals the skills of the craftsmen of the time.

6. Slide into the Chapter’s inner courtyard

A little-known architectural ensemble adjoining the cathedral. Ancient canonical buildings with a serene inner courtyard. Here, we were able to observe the architectural elements that blend medieval and Renaissance influences. The evolution of the site over the centuries is clearly visible.
7. Visit the former Saint-Jacques church

The silhouette of the former Saint-Jacques church intrigued us. Its black bell tower and Gothic-style stone façade immediately draw the eye into the urban landscape. Desecrated but preserved, this church has found a new vocation as an exhibition hall hosting various cultural events. Depending on the program, you may be able to discover a temporary exhibition during your visit.
- Opening times: vary according to exhibitions and events
- Price: according to program

8. Stop at the covered bridge and lock on the Orbiquet.

In the heart of the city, we discovered a picturesque little corner that’s well worth a visit. On one side of the street, a small covered bridge spans a narrow stream, the Orbiquet.

On the other, an old lock seems frozen in time. This discreet but charming place offered us a pleasant moment listening to the soothing rustle of the water.

9. Browse the boutiques of Rue Pont Mortain

We then returned to the lively Rue Pont Mortain, a pedestrian shopping street in the heart of Lisieux. This accessible, friendly thoroughfare is home to numerous stores, cafés and services, giving us a real feel for local life. Here you can do a little shopping, enjoy a Norman pastry or simply watch the locals come and go.
10. A glimpse of the square tower of the Institution Frémont

As we explored Lisieux, we loved the singular silhouette of the square tower of theInstitution Frémont. This vestige of an ancient fortification or medieval structure, now part of a private school, is an unusual architectural landmark in the town. Its massive presence and age contrast with the more recent buildings surrounding it.
