Access + Location to explore the region
Both towns are located in Calvados, in the heart of historic Normandy. They make excellent starting points for exploring the region, whether you’re an art and history enthusiast or simply curious about this part of Normandy.
Here are a few guidelines to help you make the right assessment:
- Bayeux to Caen = 25min drive
- Bayeux to D-Day landing beaches = 20min drive
- Caen to Deauville = 450min drive
- Caen to Honfleur = 1h drive
Caen-Carpiquet airport serves both towns. Airport to Caen: 10min drive, airport to Bayeux: 30min drive.

Bayeux Attractions

The town of Bayeux is full of resources: cultural, gastronomic, historical, botanical… There’s plenty to do, whether you’re here for a weekend or several days!
Bayeux’s main attractions impressed us with their authenticity and rich history:
- The Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, a unique treasure, has been closed to the public since September 2025 for major renovation and extension work, reopening in October 2027.
- Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral, a Norman Gothic masterpiece

Our review
Both towns boast an exceptional historical heritage. Bayeux transported us with its medieval authenticity and famous tapestry, while Caen moved us with the grandeur of its castle and abbeys. We give Bayeux a slight edge for its unique, unspoilt character.

Easy to get around these cities
Getting around Bayeux

We found Bayeux easy and pleasant to walk around, whatever the season. The historic center is compact, and all the main attractions are just a few minutes’ walk away. You’ll appreciate the tranquility of this human-sized town. However, we advise you to avoid the historic center by car and opt for accommodation with parking.
Getting around Caen

Dynamic and extensive, Caen has a well-developed tramway and bus network. Public transport makes it easy to get around between different districts and attractions. Note that parking can be more complicated in the city center.
Our review
Bayeux wins out for the simplicity and charm of exploring on foot, while Caen offers more transport options but in a more urban environment.
Can we visit Bayeux and Caen on the same trip?
Completely, because the two cities are so close geographically!
By car: 25min drive.
By train: 20min, regular service several times a day.
So it’s perfectly possible to visit both towns in the same Normandy holiday. We even recommend this combination for a complete discovery of Normandy’s heritage.
