FAQ — Parking in Caen

Is it hard to find parking in Caen?

Parking in Caen is generally manageable, as long as you know the rules. The Normandy city has a network of underground parking garages well distributed around its historic city center, supplemented by several free park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts. During our visits, we noticed that the situation gets significantly busier on Saturday afternoons and on market days: the République and Château parking lots fill up quickly at those times. Outside of these times, you can usually find a parking spot without too much trouble, as long as you don’t try to park right in the medieval alleys of Vaugueux or along the marina on a Sunday morning. We recommend planning ahead for your time slot and choosing the right parking lot based on the neighborhood you want to visit.

Caen - Is it hard to park in Caen?

Parking in Caen: Summary

Careful street parking

Street parking in Caen is metered Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We distinguish between two main zones that coexist: the Red Zone (city center), with a 2-hour time limit, and the Yellow Zone (nearby outskirts), where you can stay for up to 5 hours. Rates vary by zone: expect to pay about €1 to €1.50 for the first hour, with a sliding scale thereafter. The post-parking fee is 33€. Outside of these hours, on Sundays, and on holidays, parking is free. On Saturdays, the first hour of on-street parking is also free, with the exception of the Courtonne and Vendeuvre parking lots. Payment is made through the PayByPhone, Indigo Neo, or Flowbird apps. We used PayByPhone during our last stay, and it was a simple experience.

Free parking

There are indeed free alternatives in Caen, and we were pleasantly surprised by how many there were. The Green Zone, on the outskirts of downtown, offers free parking 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, particularly in the University (Campuses 1 and 2), Hippodrome, and Vaucelles areas. The Blue Zone, meanwhile, allows you to park for up to 1 hour and 30 minutes for free, extended to 2 hours for rechargeable electric vehicles, provided you display the European parking disc. We’d also like to highlight the park-and-ride facilities (P+R), which are the most convenient option: parking there is 100% free for Twisto users.

Caen - Free Parking

The main parking lots for tourists

  • Indigo République Parking – Underground, open 24 hours a day, paid parking (overnight rate: €1.50 per hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.)
The most central location, with direct access to Rue Saint-Pierre and the heart of the shopping district
  • Indigo Château Parking – Underground, open 24 hours a day, paid parking
At the foot of Caen Castle, ideal for exploring historic monuments and the Vaugueux neighborhood
  • Indigo Hôtel de Ville Parking Lot – Mixed-use (underground + outdoor), open 24 hours a day, paid on weekdays / free on Saturdays (above-ground lot)
Across from the Abbaye des Hommes, the free electric shuttle to downtown stops here
  • Indigo Résistance Parking – Underground, 24 hours a day, paid parking
Near Saint-Jean Church and the Saint-Pierre Basin (yacht marina)

Details of each parking lot later in the article.
On-street parking rates range from €1.00 to €1.50 per hour, depending on the zone.
Overnight rate (Indigo parking lots, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.): €1.50 per hour
Daily rate via Zenpark (Gare or Vaucelles zones): approximately €11 to €12

Essential tips

  • On Saturday afternoons and market days, the République and Château parking lots fill up quickly. It’s best to arrive before 10 a.m. to avoid the crowds.
  • If you’re staying in Caen, ask your accommodation provider about your options, especially for multi-day underground parking passes.
  • For a long stay, book a multi-day package in advance on the Indigo Neo app: rates are on a sliding scale, and your spot is guaranteed.
  • As in all tourist areas: do not leave any visible objects or luggage in the passenger compartment. Place all your belongings in the closed trunk before arriving at your destination.
  • Since January 1, 2025, Caen la Mer has had a ZFE-m. Vehicles with Crit’Air ratings 0 through 5 are permitted on the roads, but unclassified vehicles are subject to restrictions. Be sure to check your Crit’Air sticker before you come.

Where to park to get closer to specific locations in Caen

Caen has plenty of attractions; many are concentrated in the historic center, but some are located on the outskirts, so here are our recommendations for each.
See our article on Caen’s top attractions.

Where to park when visiting the historic center: Rue Saint-Pierre and the Ducal Castle

To explore the shopping district of Caen and reach the Ducal Castle, two parking lots complement each other perfectly, depending on which route you take. The Indigo République parking garage serves as the natural gateway to Rue Saint-Pierre: its pedestrian exit leads directly onto the main street, surrounded by shops and just a stone’s throw from Saint-Pierre Church. We particularly appreciate this parking lot for its convenience on weekdays and its attractive nighttime rate of €1.50 per hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. For the Château itself and the area surrounding the medieval quarter of Vaugueux, the Indigo Château parking lot is the obvious choice: you’ll emerge right at the foot of the ramparts, with no detours. We have checked this route and can confirm that the Museum of Fine Arts and the alleys of Vaugueux are just a few minutes’ walk away.

Where to Park When Visiting the Abbaye des Hommes

The Abbaye aux Hommes (Saint-Étienne Abbey), founded by William the Conqueror in the11th century, is one of the most visited landmarks in Caen. The best way to get there is to use the Indigo Hôtel de Ville parking garage, located directly across from the building on Place Louis Guillouard. This parking lot also offers a significant advantage: its 230-space multi-level parking garage is completely free all day on Saturdays, making it the ideal solution for a weekend visit. We also note that the free electric shuttle from downtown stops at this location. We also particularly appreciate the Saturday option, where you can park your car for free while enjoying immediate access to one of Caen’s most iconic landmarks.

View of the abbey from the esplanade.

Where can I park to visit the marina and the Saint-Pierre basin?

To get to the Saint-Pierre basin and the marina’s docks, the Indigo Résistance parking lot is the most convenient option. Located right next to Saint-Jean Church and the lake, it puts you just a few minutes’ walk from the waterfront terraces and restaurants. One thing to keep in mind, however: on Sunday mornings, a large weekly market takes over the harbor quays. Parking is prohibited there, and vehicles may be towed; as a result, adjacent roads experience heavy traffic congestion. In this case, we recommend using the République parking lot or planning to arrive early in the morning. We emphasize this point because impound lots are common there.

Where can I park for free in Caen?

There are more free things to do in Caen than in many other French tourist cities, and some of them are very well served by public transportation. Here, we present the best alternatives, with full transparency regarding their distance and access requirements.

  • Hippodrome Parking Lot (outdoor): approximately 600 free parking spaces, located a 10-15-minute walk from downtown. It’s the best option for avoiding high prices without straying too far from the city center.
  • Parc des Expositions / Zénith Parking Lot (Park & Ride): Free outdoor parking. A Twisto electric shuttle runs every 15 minutes, Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., dropping passengers off directly in the downtown pedestrian zone.
  • Caen Côte de Nacre Park-and-Ride (Boulevard Henri Becquerel): 350 free parking spaces, connected to downtown in less than 15 minutes via the T1 tram line. Free parking is available with a validated Twisto ticket.
  • Ifs Jean Vilar Park-and-Ride (Avenue Jean Vilar): 90 spaces, also connected to the T1 tram line. Same eligibility requirements: A Twisto subscription is required to qualify for the free offer.
  • Free parking streets near the city center: Rue du Magasin à Poudre (120 spaces), Rond-Point de l’Orne (60 spaces), Avenue de Lausanne (35 spaces). Free, unlimited parking in the Green Zone.

Where should you avoid parking in Caen?

Parking regulations in Caen are clear, but a few areas account for the majority of unpleasant surprises. It’s best to know the restrictions before parking your car just anywhere.

  • The pedestrianized city center (Rue Saint-Pierre and Rue de Geôle): extremely narrow alleys, with traffic regulated by retractable bollards. Street parking is virtually nonexistent there, and traffic is heavy. There’s no point in driving there.
  • The Vaugueux neighborhood: this medieval area is entirely pedestrian-only. It is impossible to drive or park there. The only option is to use the Château parking lot and walk to the neighborhood.
  • The marina area (Vendeuvre Pier / Saint-Pierre Basin) on Sunday mornings: Due to the large weekly market, parking is prohibited there and vehicles will be towed immediately. Traffic on the adjacent roads is extremely heavy until mid-morning.

FAQ — Parking in Caen

Where can you park in Caen without having to walk too far?

For families with strollers, people with limited mobility, or those who prefer to avoid long walks, the République and Château underground parking garages are the most convenient options. We recommend the first route to reach Rue Saint-Pierre and the downtown shops, and the second to go directly to the area around the castle and the Vaugueux. We would also like to note that for those who choose to use the free off-site parking lots, the Twisto electric shuttle runs to the Parc des Expositions every 15 minutes. You won’t have to walk: drop-off is right in the pedestrian zone.

Secure and underground parking lots in Caen

If you’re leaving your car for several days or traveling with luggage, the four Indigo parking lots (République, Château, Hôtel de Ville, Résistance) all offer a high level of security. The Indigo République Parking Garage and the Indigo Château Parking Garage are distinguished by their 24/7 video surveillance. The first one also has a physical reception desk. These enclosed, well-lit facilities are accessible 24 hours a day, making them ideal for late departures or nighttime arrivals. We highly recommend them, especially for stays lasting several days. In summary, we consider these four facilities to be the most reliable in Caen for stress-free parking.

Is there a parking lot in Caen that’s open 24 hours a day?

Good news for travelers arriving at night or leaving early in the morning: the four Indigo parking lots in downtown Caen (République, Château, Hôtel de Ville, Résistance) are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can pay at the self-checkout kiosks, which accept credit cards and payments via the Indigo Neo app. We also note that this app allows for “hands-free” access via license plate recognition, a convenient feature that saves time at the entrance. We tested it, and it really does save time.

What is the cheapest parking lot in Caen?

For a few hours, the yellow-zone parking spaces at 1 €/h remain the most economical option, as does the first half-hour of free parking at the Hôtel de Ville parking garage. On Saturdays, you can enjoy the rooftop terrace at City Hall—it’s completely free all day long. For a full day, we recommend the Hippodrome parking lot (600 spaces, completely free, a 10-15-minute walk from downtown). Park-and-ride facilities are also free for Twisto network users. In paid underground parking garages, the daily rates for private parking lots listed on Zenpark (in the Gare or Vaucelles areas) range from about €11 to €12. We also compared these prices and can confirm that the Hippodrome remains unbeatable for a full day.

Can you reserve a parking spot in advance in Caen?

Yes, and we highly recommend it for busy weekends and extended stays. Almost all of the underground parking garages in downtown Caen (Château, République, Résistance, Hôtel de Ville) are managed by Indigo: you can reserve a spot in advance at any of them through the Indigo Neo website or app, with discounted rates for multi-day passes. We would also like to note that the long-term parking lot at the Caen Train Station (P1), managed by EFFIA, offers online reservations to ensure the availability of a parking space.

What are the best parking options on Saturdays in Caen?

Caen offers a very convenient parking spot for drivers, and we’d like to let you know about it. On Saturdays, the first hour of street parking is free (excluding the Courtonne and Vendeuvre parking lots), and the 230-space multi-level parking garage at the Hôtel de Ville is free all day. This allows you to combine shopping or sightseeing with low-cost—or even free—parking. We recommend taking full advantage of this to make the most of your budget.
