Hidden from view, but close to all the wonders of Honfleur, La Maison de Lucie is a charming hotel: an 18th century building with an elegant decoration. After a day of exploration, it is a peaceful place to rest surrounded by beauty and poetry.
In this article, we propose you a return in images on our stay in the hotel with our opinion and all the practical information for you also, to relax in this beautiful hotel!
This review is completely independent, we stayed anonymously and paid our bill in full.
Why stay at the hotel La Maison de Lucie
Among the very rich hotel offer in Honfleur, the hotel La Maison de Lucie is really one of our favorites for several reasons:
- For its refined decoration
As soon as you enter this beautiful building, you can’t help but fall under its spell.
In the living rooms you will find sumptuous woodwork with beams or marquetry on the floor.
And in the rooms (or at least in ours) the owners have done a remarkable job with the materials: wood, glass, ceramics… We started by admiring every corner of the room!
- For its peaceful and inspiring atmosphere
The hotel is very close to St. Catherine’s Church, but in a street without stores, so it is much quieter.
It is also a bit high. From some of the rooms you can see the garden and the roofs of the houses. And from others, you saw over the hills and the Seine Estuary.
The house has many windows and you feel in a cocoon to admire Honfleur.
- For its location
Only 250m from the famous wooden church of Sainte-Catherine in Honfleur, you can put your car down and explore the old town on foot.
But remember to wear comfortable shoes, Honfleur is covered with old cobblestones!

Is La Maison de Lucie hotel worth it? Our review
Yes. Absolutely.
We had a real crush when we discovered the interior of this house.
It is impossible not to appreciate the detail work in the decoration.
It’s a mix of historical, retro and modern. Surprising, but it works!
We particularly like the uniqueness of the bathroom with the 2 shades of green and the large etched and frosted glass.
The brightness of the 5 windows of our room was very appreciable.
And we slept very well there.

Decoration and ambiance – The Room
The rooms are between 19 and 22 m2 (There are also 3 larger suites).
Ours was on the second floor with lots of windows and a view of the garden.
The entrance was impressive with all the wood and the brightness of the room.
The ceiling is covered with beams.
The decoration is elegant, around natural materials of quality.
And the little chocolates on the pillow were excellent! We are greedy…
But the most surprising thing was the bathroom.
The green duo is surprising, but works very well with the wood and the rest of the room. But we couldn’t get a picture that did this piece justice.
Ours had a bathtub with a glass window separating it from the hallway, which was frosted and etched. A unique and very successful decor. We’ll give you the picture of the glass, because this idea transforms the room!

Common areas
The common areas are also worth a visit.
You have several lounges to relax in with beams, fireplaces and art pieces.
Don’t miss the floor: it is made of marquetry! Absolutely superb.
In one of the lounges, there is a small bar area.
And in another, a beautiful fireplace.
The garden is also very well thought out.
We were there in autumn, and could not take advantage of it to settle outside, but it has a very pleasant atmosphere with exotic essences, cobblestones and the sight on this beautiful red brick building.
Spa
The hotel also has a spa area with jacuzzi.
It is located in vaulted cellars, so you are surrounded by old stones with a subdued light. It seems very calm and inspiring.
Unfortunately we did not have time to test it. Maybe next time!
Catering
This hotel does not have a restaurant.
But you are only a 2 minute walk from the first restaurants and 5 minutes from a large choice.

History
The house dates from the 18th century. It has apparently changed little in appearance.
It is known to be the birthplace of Lucie Delarue-Madrus. She was born there in 1874, into a middle-class family.
His nickname is
Lucie alias “Princesse Amande” married Joseph Charles Mardrus in 1900 and they traveled together. This nomadic life inspired her and she became an unclassifiable artist: poet, novelist, journalist, historian… with her love of words. But she also tried her hand at sculpture, music, and drawing… She even participated in the French women’s chess championship in 1927.
She was a committed woman, long time lover of Natalie Barney. She has produced over 70 books.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.
How to get there
The city of Honfleur has been for a long time rather poorly served, even if this has improved (a little) with the construction of the beautiful Pont de Normandie in 1988.
We clearly advise you to opt for the car by renting your car if necessary from Paris.
If you are more adventurous, you can take a train from Paris Saint Lazare either to Le Havre or to Deauville and finish by bus (minimum 3h30 of travel)…
Parking
There are a few parking spaces on the street, but they are often taken. You can drive up to drop off your luggage before parking.
When you think of bad connections, the seaside and the tourist city, you think of parking problems! Around the old center, you will find several paying parking lots where you can leave your car for the night. Remember to add about 20 euros to your budget per day of parking.
Do not make
THE SAME MISTAKE WE MADE
On one of our last trips to Europe, a hacker stole our credit card details while we were using a hotel WiFi.
So our trip began with a “card blocked” call… Not funny at all!
Learn from our mistake, make a small VPN investment to surf without worry.
Is the hotel family friendly?
The hotel La Maison de Lucie is ideal for a romantic stay.
Almost all rooms have a double bed.
There is an attic suite that can accommodate a family. Remember to book early!
Our top 3 things to do in Honfleur
Walk around the old basin
Became the most most typical of Honfleur, the old basin was used for a long time by fishermen and sailors who armed their boats in the shelter, before facing the dreaded Sleeve! Lined with tall Norman houses, some of whose facades are covered with slate, the old basin has inspired a whole generation of impressionist paintersinspired by the reflections of the water and the 50 shades of sky so characteristic of the mouth of the Seine. Let yourself be charmed!
Discover the church of Sainte Catherine
This church in the heart of Honfleur is a rare piece of religious heritage in France. Entirely built in wood, its vault has the shape of an overturned boat hull (15th century). Its oak belfry was moved to an annex building for fear of lightning igniting the frame, but also because it could not withstand the weight of the 6 bells sheltered for a time in the belfry. We particularly like the atmosphere of this church which recalls the maritime vocation of Honfleur with its numerous ex-voto plaques dedicated to fishermen and the sea.

Visit the Eugène Boudin Museum
Born in Honfleur in 1824, Eugène Boudin is an emblematic painter of the impressionist movement who was greatly inspired by the landscapes of Normandy and Brittany. He has become famous for his marine works, knowing how to render, like no other, theharbor atmosphere that we love so much. The Eugène Boudin Museum in Honfleur, located in the former chapel of the Augustine convent, houses a rich collection dedicated to the famous painter and the Impressionists, but also to lesser known aspects of Norman popular art (wooden games, posters…).
