The restaurant La Maison B in Bayeux welcomes you in an atypical setting that will immerse you in an atmosphere of memories and recollections after the Second World War and the D-Day Landings, historical turning points that marked Normandy.

In the historical heart of the city, you will taste a family cuisine in a musical atmosphere.

Find in this article our experience at the restaurant La Maison B in Bayeux and our opinion in pictures.

This review is completely independent, we ate anonymously and paid our bill in full.

Why eat at La Maison B in Bayeux?

Is the Maison B restaurant worth it? Our opinion

Yes, we enjoyed this immersion in another universe, thanks to the 1950s-style decor with its bright red furniture and silver crockery. The dishes are generous.

The restaurant is also well located in the city center, literally a stone’s throw from the city’s tourist attractions, such as the Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral and the Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History (MAHB).

We liked it:

  • the quality of the service and the kindness of the team,
  • the generosity of the dishes,
  • the atypical setting and the decorative details,
  • the musical atmosphere.

What you will eat

A menu between land and sea with specialties of the region is offered by the restaurant La Maison B. Three menus to choose from:

  • the lunch formula with dish and dessert both of the day, a glass of wine and a coffee,
  • the menu “Saveurs de Normandie” with 2 possible choices,
  • the Maison Blanche menu with starter, main course and dessert à la carte.

The restaurant also offers a series of 5 cocktails, beers, cider and several soft drinks. We opted for a glass of white Chardonnay and a gin and tonic cocktail for a change!

The atmosphere of the restaurant

In its 1950s style décor, the immersion in another era is total at the restaurant La Maison B. Beyond its bright red banquettes and white tablecloths, which are immediately noticeable, several decorative details give the place its cachet.

Some may recognize a poster from the famous cult movie “La Grande Vadrouille” with actors Louis de Funès and Bourvil, which takes place during World War II.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is also warm and good-natured, especially when the owner of the place takes to the piano for an improvised recital.

At the end of the meal, we were kindly offered a local digestif. We named it: Calvados!

Our top 3 things to do in Bayeux

Stroll through the alleys of the historic center

Historic center of Bayeux in Normandy

In a setting that is both authentic and warm, we were seduced by the charm of the historic heart of Bayeux. Indeed, the medieval architecture is well preserved. Take the time to stroll through the small streets of the center!

There is a lot to see while walking in Old Bayeux:

  • the old half-timbered houses, mansions or manor houses with turrets all over downtown,
  • the cobbled streets where their windows of craftsmen anddelicatessens display local products will surely make you envious,
  • the tourist wonders of the city remained intact despite the Second World War.

You will also have the possibility to visit Bayeux:

  • by taking the little tourist train of the city,
  • by following the explanatory markers and the bronze nails on the path of the Old Bayeux walking tour.

Visit the Bayeux Tapestry Museum

Reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is on display in the town’s former Major Seminary, or former Catholic college. Also, this exceptional embroidery tells thestory of the conquest of England in the 11th century by the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror. The Bayeux Tapestry is 68 meters long and about 70 cm wide, 50 cm of which are devoted to the embroidery itself. It is a didactic narrative in 58 scenes based on the model of a stained glass window. Historically, the design of this narrative embroidery was commissioned to adorn the nave of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Bayeux.

Read our article dedicated to the Bayeux Tapestry with many photos and tips to make the most of your visit.

Visit the Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral

Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Bayeux is a centerpiece of the Old Bayeux circuit. With its medieval architecture, its stained glass windows, its crypt as well as its Romanesque and Gothic styles, it is a place not to be missed. The famous Bayeux Tapestry would have been embroidered in the 11th century to decorate its nave. If you go down into the crypt of the cathedral, be sure to look up to see the 15th century frescoes of the musical angels. In short, a listed monument not to be missed, illuminated from sunset onwards, which is also one of the stops on the Bayeux tourist train.
