They are not free.<br\/>They are clearly indicated. Deauville has quickly established itself as a prestigious place to spend the summer.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/n-r2MKTJ\/Deauville\/Planches\/i-2kd4334\/0\/5714367c\/L\/Deauville_planches_bains-L.jpg\" alt=\"planches de Deauville - sea bathing establishment\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pompeian baths<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1921, a decision was taken to replace the old beach cabins and boardwalk with a sea bathing establishment. Architect <strong>Charles Adda<\/strong> was commissioned to design the project, which was completed in 1923 as an Art Deco complex.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/n-r2MKTJ\/Deauville\/Planches\/i-FJ5GbN4\/0\/390d57a5\/L\/Deauville_planches_bains-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"planches de Deauville - Cabins\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latter included 250 cabins:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sober concrete architecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>arranged around atriums,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with colonnades and basins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adorned with magnificent mosaics.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They formed a transition between the sand and nature and the buildings of the city.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/n-r2MKTJ\/Deauville\/Planches\/i-kwbxqBV\/0\/d60f7f5f\/L\/Deauville_planches_bains_decor-L.jpg\" alt=\"Deauville boards - mosaic\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The wooden boardwalk: structure<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also Adda who designed the famous &#8220;Planks&#8221;, installed alongside the sea-view cabins. These walkways form a harmonious transition between the concrete and the surrounding sand.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/n-r2MKTJ\/Deauville\/Planches\/i-R6Jpzr7\/0\/6c48f0c8\/L\/Deauville_planches-L.jpg\" alt=\"Boardwalk wooden planks\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a long wooden deck, 7m wide.<br\/>It was originally 44m long.<br\/>Then 656m long.<br\/>In 2022, in preparation for the boards&#8217; 100th anniversary, a 60m extension was added, bringing the total length to <strong>over 700m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assembly consists of 64 laths laid side by side (according to what we&#8217;ve read, but we&#8217;ll have to count them next time we go).<br\/>The boards are made from rot-resistant azobe wood, a hard, heavy, dense wood that stands up well to harsh conditions all year round.
