We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices, and paying all our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy : Map + tips  <\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 5 landing beaches &#8211; map and introduction<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operation Overlord, a.k.a. the Normandy invasion, began on June 6, 1944. 5 main areas were strategically chosen by the Allies on the Normandy coast. They cover a section of more than 80km (50 miles). Code names have been given:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Utah Beach, the westernmost beach where American troops landed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Omaha Beach, where American troops landed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gold Beach, where British troops landed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Juno Beach where Canadian troops landed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sword Beach where British troops landed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p find cemeteries, batteries, memorials and museums. They are all fascinating to discover.<br\/>Depending on your family history, you can choose the one that interests you the most.<br\/>And if you don&#8217;t know about special family ties, here are our opinions to help you choose:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Utah Beach is the most <strong>fun<\/strong>: an open-air museum, a battery and the new D-Day Experience nearby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Omaha Beach is the most <strong>emotional<\/strong>: the magnificent sculpture on the beach, the intensity of the American cemetery. We didn&#8217;t expect to feel so many overwhelming emotions as we stood in front of all these crosses lined up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gold Beach is the most <strong>visually fascinating:<\/strong> the remains of the temporary port appear at low tide, the view from the cliffs&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Juno Beach is the <strong>quickest to visit <\/strong>&#8211; if you&#8217;re short on time, the beach and museum are right next to each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sword Beach is the most <strong>strategy-oriented<\/strong> &#8211; no beach experience here, but the Antalntic Wall Museum in the Bunker is a unique experience, and the Pegasus Memorial tells us more about this critical victory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R22a-Arromanches\/i-XrT7bCs\/4\/e105a5ba\/L\/arromanches_Normandie-5189-L.jpg\" alt=\"Representation of the fighting during the landing at Arromanches\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not recommend public transportation to visit the landing beaches. There are some local buses, but not very frequent and with many stops for the locals.<br\/>Your best options are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>By car  <\/strong><br\/>Visiting by car gives you a lot of flexibility in choosing where to go and how much time to spend at each place.<br\/>You can rent at <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/renting-car-cdg-airport-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDG<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/renting-car-orly-airport-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orly<\/a> airports, or Caen<a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/renting-car-caen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(see our tips<\/a>) or your point of arrival in France &#8211;
