They get out of their car, get on the shuttle and follow the people inside.<br\/>But, in our opinion, choosing to walk there from the parking lots is the best option.<br\/>The path is flat and easy. Count 40min to 50min of walking.<br\/>Enjoy the sea air and the changing landscape as you approach the mountain.<br\/>At the beginning you see the mountain with the water of the dam, then with fields (and sometimes sheep), then with the footbridge and, finally, surrounded by sand or water (depending on the tides).<\/p>\n\n<p>The anticipation makes the experience even better!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Acces-a-pied\/i-HVWr6s9\/2\/8a9bd82b\/L\/acces_mont_saint_michel-13-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mont-Saint-Michel footbridge  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Slow down at all 3 gates<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Village\/i-Sg6SGqN\/0\/30d11c92\/L\/porte_mont_saint_michel-3-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mont-Saint-Michel door  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Also, we saw many people rushing to see the famous main street, and not taking the time to appreciate the fortified gates and drawbridge.<br\/>The entrance to the village was fortified in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is defended by 3 doors, 3 successive obstacles.<br\/>Don&#8217;t just look at the openings, look at the doors themselves, next to you as you pass under them.<br\/>Notice that the first courtyard is triangular in shape.  <br\/>And the last of the gates, the King&#8217;s Gate, is the most impressive. The harrow is still in place. Explore the ramparts &#8211; best things to do at Mont-Saint-Michel <\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Remparts\/i-XdQWPHP\/0\/063fc8a5\/L\/remparts_mont_saint_michel-74-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ramparts of the Mont-Saint-Michel  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Once you have admired the lower part of the main street with its old houses (especially the half-timbered fa\u00e7ade of the Auberge de la Sir\u00e8ne), don&#8217;t continue up. Take the stairs behind you to the ramparts.  <br\/>And walk up the covered way to the abbey.<\/p>\n\n<p>We love the walk on the ramparts with its views of the village, the roofs, the abbey and the bay. Probably our favorite part of the visit to the Mont outside the abbey.<\/p>\n\n<p>The houses are nestled behind these 15th century ramparts which remained impregnable during the Hundred Years War.<br\/>The walkway allows to circulate between the different towers: some high and circular, others in the shape of a horseshoe. They all had different strategic roles: the North Tower, the Arcade Tower, the Beatrix Tower, the Gabriel Tower&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Remparts\/i-HB4dmhP\/0\/101b0ec9\/L\/remparts_mont_saint_michel-31-L.jpg\" alt=\"view from the ramparts of Mont-Saint-Michel  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Each arrival on a tower offers a different experience. And between the two, you can enjoy interesting views of the village (and the roofs of the houses) and a completely unobstructed view of the bay (don&#8217;t miss the islet of Tombelaine).<\/p>\n\n<p>Take your time and notice the details: gargoyles, roofing systems, chimney shapes, stones used&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Village\/i-G2nCTzf\/0\/5fae879b\/L\/tour_gabriel_mont_saint_michel-09-L.jpg\" alt=\"Gargoyle\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The abbey &#8211; what to visit at Mont-Saint-Michel  <\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Abbaye\/i-WVk2PTP\/1\/f5a6104c\/L\/entree_abbaye_mont_saint_michel-02-L.jpg\" alt=\"stairs of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>And of course, a visit to the abbey is a must.<br\/>It is a remarkable example of medieval religious architecture.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>To know before embarking on the visit:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tour includes climbing up and down a lot of steps. Including many in a row from the start. This multi-story structure offers beautiful rooms with interesting lights.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the top you can enjoy the church and its large terrace. It opens onto beautiful views of the bay. Early in the morning, the lights in the church are fabulous in the high flamboyant gothic choir.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then you discover the jewel of the abbey (and the most photographed part): the famous cloister. Looking up the Grande Rue<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Village\/i-BBVQ3CP\/0\/dbc07f03\/L\/rue_mont_saint_michel-18-L.jpg\" alt=\"main street of Mont-Saint-Michel  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>You can also go up or down the Grande Rue (or both).<br\/>You&#8217;ll probably be looking ahead a lot to try to find a path between people.<br\/>But if you visit early or out of season, you can take the time to look up, over the stores (filled with imported products).<br\/>All along, you can see fascinating and sometimes twisted houses. They date from the 15th and 16th centuries:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>some are wood-framed like the Auberge de la Sir\u00e8ne,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>others in granite stones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The street is narrow and sloping.<br\/>Harry Potter fans will particularly appreciate this street, as it is reminiscent of the Diagon Alley.<\/p>\n\n<p>From this street start small alleys and stairs. It&#8217;s fun to explore.<br\/>Don&#8217;t miss the &#8220;venelle du Guet&#8221; also called &#8220;ruelle des cocus&#8221;. It is located in front of the hotel La Croix Blanche. It is the narrowest of the village. It is open at least from 9am to 5pm.<br\/>It was Bertrand Du Guesclin who had this house built to shelter his wife Tiphaine de Raguenel.<br\/>You climb a spiral staircase to discover different rooms with antique furniture, armor and period objects, especially chastity belts. The women were sometimes obliged to wear them during the long absences of their husbands.<\/p>\n\n<p>We introduce you to the others further down in the article.<br\/>The museum is currently undergoing a major modernization and cultural overhaul. The concepts, itineraries and ticketing of the &#8220;Pass 4 mus\u00e9es&#8221; are constantly evolving: don&#8217;t hesitate to check recent openings and site news just before your visit!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13.
