Then there are the manor houses<\/strong>. The distinction is sometimes very blurred. However, it is generally accepted that castles were designed as defensive fortresses<\/strong> for the upper nobility. Manor houses, on the other hand, served as residences<\/strong> for lesser nobility and wealthy landowners. They combined residential and agricultural functions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

These manor houses were mainly built between the 15th and 17th centuries<\/strong>, and feature characteristic architecture: half-timbering<\/strong> or limestone for the main dwelling, stair towers<\/strong>, sloping roofs<\/strong> and elaborate dormers<\/strong>. They also feature farm outbuildings<\/strong>, making them typical of Normandy’s rural landscape. It’s true that some of them look a lot like castles.<\/p>\n\n

Manoir d’Ango is a Renaissance<\/strong> masterpiece. Italian influence meets Norman soul. We particularly enjoyed the courtyard, with its famous dovecote featuring a bulbous roof<\/strong> and polychrome<\/strong> brick and flint motifs<\/strong>. We lingered under the richly decorated arches of the loggia<\/strong>, thinking of the surrealist artists<\/strong> who, like us, had been seduced by this place: Andr\u00e9 Breton, Louis Aragon, Jacques Pr\u00e9vert, Robert Desnos, Yves Tanguy, Georges Braque…<\/p>\n\n
