The main street is very narrow and it&#8217;s unbearable not to be able to move forward when it&#8217;s full of people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear <strong>good<\/strong> walking <strong>shoes<\/strong>. It&#8217;s an old village on a rocky islet&#8230; there are cobblestones and many (many!) steps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reserve<\/strong> your time to visit <strong>the<\/strong> magnificent <strong>abbey<\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/billets-labbaye-du-mont-saint-michel-l145867\/?partner=region_lovers&amp;tq_campaign=NL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">book here<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t take a big <strong>bag<\/strong>. It takes a little time to absorb the atmosphere and visualize its history. Stop by <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/maison-pelerin-beauvoir-mont-saint-michel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maison P\u00e9lerin<\/a>, a 5-minute drive away, for a wide selection of products and a more leisurely experience: caramels, black garlic from the bay, cookies from the Abbaye sisters&#8230; We were pleasantly surprised by the way the products were displayed (even if it is still a tourist store).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take a deep breath!  <\/strong>You&#8217;re at the seaside, in a place like no other in the world. Take your time, breathe in the fresh air, listen to the stones and birds of the bay, admire the lights! view from the abbey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">News and events 2026 at Mont-Saint-Michel<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High tides 2026<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2026 won&#8217;t be a record year, but there will still be high tides when the Mont becomes an island again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>August 14 (around 9:28 p.m.) and September 12 (around 9:02 p.m.), when the esplanade may be submerged and road access cut off for a few hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult the tide calendar <a href=\"https:\/\/montsaintmichel.gouv.fr\/medias\/livret-calendrier-marees-2026-epmsm-a5-exe-9048.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Events<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2026, the Mont&#8217;s Tourist Information Centre will be hosting a &#8220;Secrets d&#8217;herboriste&#8221; exhibition on the powers of plants, open to the general public (until June).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modification<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A major project to restore the Mont (costing over 50 million euros) is underway, which will involve some work zones, as well as the future development of certain parts of the site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parking prices are changing again (as they do every year)&#8230; Each time we visit, <strong>we are overwhelmed<\/strong> by what has been built here.<br\/>France&#8217;s cathedrals are impressive enough, but here, the abbey is built atop a steep rocky islet surrounded by a huge bay.<br\/>It&#8217;s impossible to compare this place to any other!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Acces-a-pied\/i-w8vdL7c\/2\/e7f406cf\/L\/acces_mont_saint_michel-14-L.jpg\" alt=\"Walk to Mont-Saint-Michel  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Mont-Saint-Michel is one of France&#8217;s most visited sites.<br\/>It is often the 2nd most recognized monument after the Eiffel Tower. Some call it the Ch\u00e2teau du Mont-Saint-Michel.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A brief history<\/h3>\n\n<p>To give you some context, here are a few highlights from its history:<\/p>\n\n<p>Mont-Saint-Michel was originally called Mont-Tombe. Since the 6th century, hermits have lived here with a small chapel.<br\/>According to a 9th-century manuscript, in 708 <strong>the archangel St. Michael<\/strong> commanded the bishop of Avranches to build a church there. It became a place of pilgrimage.<br\/>It developed strongly from the 10th century onwards, when it became part of Normandy. A monastery on 3 levels (due to the slope of the rock) was built.<br\/>Over the centuries, fires, the Hundred Years&#8217; War, the Revolution and collapses caused the abbey to evolve. The place was rebuilt over and over again, right up to the &#8220;Wonder&#8221; we see today.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Acces-a-pied\/i-WhPw5tz\/2\/fec156d8\/L\/mont_saint_michel-12-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A few figures to put things in perspective<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The mountain is 900m in circumference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its highest point is at 80m<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tides can reach an amplitude of 15m.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The statue of Saint Michael slaying the dragon is 4.5 m high<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is perched 156m above sea level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2019, the commune had 29 year-round residents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Acces-a-pied\/i-q5dSPhc\/2\/3956e3b7\/L\/mont_saint_michel-4-L.jpg\" alt=\"The spire and sculpture of the Archangel Saint-Michel\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The spire and sculpture of the Archangel Saint-Michel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best time: when to visit Mont-Saint-Michel  <\/h2>\n\n<p>The best time depends of course on what you&#8217;re looking for: absence of crowds, sunshine, high tides?  <br\/>Don&#8217;t worry, no matter when you visit, you&#8217;ll be amazed!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Best months\/seasons<\/h3>\n\n<p>There&#8217;s really no better season, as winter lights, autumn colors and summer sunshine all bring something special to the views of Mont-Saint-Michel.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Acces-a-pied\/i-7jzB448\/2\/2067c99d\/L\/vue_mont_saint_michel-03-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mont-Saint-Michel in October\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mont-Saint-Michel in October<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Finally you have to ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n<p>If you want warmth, visit during the summer months.<br\/>If you want to avoid the crowds, <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/visit-mont-saint-michel-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visit during winter<\/a> (November to March).<br\/>The main street is narrow and it&#8217;s one of the most visited places in France, so we&#8217;re not kidding when we say crowds!<\/p>\n\n<p>Just be aware that some hotels and restaurants close during the winter season.<\/p>\n\n<p>Personally, we&#8217;re particularly fond of October. Beautiful colors, long days and a few less tourists than in summer.<\/p>\n\n<p>But avoid the French school vacation periods!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Best days<\/h3>\n\n<p>Similarly, if you want to avoid the crowds, don&#8217;t visit on a weekend.<br\/>On weekdays, attendance is roughly equivalent.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Village\/i-SwMJPJk\/0\/970acd85\/L\/rue_mont_saint_michel-13-L.jpg\" alt=\"Avoid crowds in narrow streets\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Avoid crowds in narrow streets<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The abbey is open every day of the year except January<sup>1<\/sup>, May<sup>1<\/sup> and December 25.<br\/>The shuttle bus from the parking lots runs every day of the year.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Best hours &#8211; Opening hours<\/h3>\n\n<p>Mont-Saint-Michel remains open at all hours.<br\/>The shuttle operates from 7:30 a.m. to at least 11 p.m. in summer and from 8:30 a.m. to at least 10 p.m. in winter.<br\/>The abbey is open at least from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/billets-labbaye-du-mont-saint-michel-l145867\/?partner=region_lovers&amp;tq_campaign=NL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">reserve your admission slot<\/a>! <br\/>Museums are open at least from 10am to 5pm.<\/p>\n\n<p>To avoid the crowds, it&#8217;s best to visit early or late.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even better, we recommend a night on Mont-Saint-Michel.  <br\/>Strolling through the narrow streets and ramparts <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/mont-saint-michel-night\/\">at night<\/a> is an entirely different experience, like traveling back in time. You&#8217;ll be able to better appreciate this historic site.<br\/>See our section below on where to sleep at Mont-Saint-Michel.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Sunrises and sunsets<\/h3>\n\n<p>For sunrises and sunsets, photographers will surely prefer not to be on the mountain. It&#8217;s more interesting to take the mountain with the sun shaving down!<br\/>Just be aware that it&#8217;s not always easy to find a location with the right alignment depending on the season.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Normandie-Lovers\/Mont-saint-michel\/Coucher-soleil\/i-sRdgtqt\/2\/c1dab0fc\/L\/coucher_soleil_mont_saint_michel-52-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset from Mont-Saint-Michel\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sunset from Mont-Saint-Michel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Visit during high tides<\/h3>\n\n<p>The mountain is known for its changes during high tides.<br\/>At this point, the water rises 15m over 15km and the mountain becomes an island surrounded by water once again. It&#8217;s fascinating to watch the place transform!<br\/>A coefficient of at least <strong>110<\/strong> is required.  <br\/>They take place:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>end of March<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>end of September<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and perhaps mid-April, mid-August and mid-October<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>And every twenty years or so, the &#8220;tide of the century&#8221; takes place. The coefficient exceeds 118. The next ones will take place on Thursday, March 3, 2033 and Tuesday, March 14, 2051.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. How long to expect at Mont-Saint-Michel  <\/h3>\n\n<p>Contrary to some websites, we don&#8217;t recommend 2 hours. The reality of visiting the Mont &#8211; accessibility<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Mount is not easy to visit. It&#8217;s a very old village on a rocky islet. This means old cobblestones, steep slopes and stairs.<\/p>\n\n<p>Wear flat shoes. And if you have knee problems, take walking sticks.<br\/>Avoid strollers, prefer backpacks. We&#8217;ve seen people really struggling with baby carriages.<\/p>\n\n<p>Regarding wheelchair access to Mont-Saint-Michel. We were able to talk to a lady who was doing just that. She was delighted with her experience. The shuttle is well adapted, and she&#8217;s already been able to appreciate the view of the Mont as she arrives.<br\/>And with someone to push her, she was able to see the bottom of the main street (the gaps between the cobblestones had been filled in, so it was possible to drive).<br\/>However, she had no access to the ramparts, the abbey or the rest of the village.<\/p>\n\n<figure Restaurants in the village and at La Caserne<\/h3>\n\n<p>In our opinion, none of the restaurants on the mountain or at La Caserne is really a must.<br\/>They make the most of their prime location&#8230;<br\/>The best-known are :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Restaurant du Relais du Mont-Saint-Michel for its view of the mountain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Restaurant Auberge de la M\u00e8re Poulard for its omelette, an institution since the 19th century &#8211; nice to see the preparation. The texture is interesting, but the taste is still an omelette.
