Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, the Ch\u00e2teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet is definitely worth a visit, for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its unique architecture combines <strong>medieval<\/strong> and <strong>Renaissance<\/strong> <strong>styles<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colorful glazed <strong>checkerboard facades<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its <strong>moats<\/strong> make it a picturesque site,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its park and formal <strong>gardens<\/strong> add to its charm,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inside, we were fascinated by the <strong>rich period furnishings<\/strong> and <strong>works of<\/strong>art.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our opinion, it&#8217;s one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-castles-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful ch\u00e2teaux in Normandy<\/a>, and also our favorite.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-DpfkVJv\/4\/NKjTpMbXQcTmnC6pp4cqwwJJ7Sh7qTP6CVpkRpkWB\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-5432-L.jpg\" alt=\"General view of Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the Ch\u00e2teau de Saint Germain de Livet famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ch\u00e2teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet is renowned for its unique architecture.\nIts checkerboard facades of stone and green-glazed brick are rare in Normandy.\nThe ch\u00e2teau is also notable for the works on display by painter <strong>L\u00e9on Reisener<\/strong>, first cousin of<strong>Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix<\/strong>.\nThe painter&#8217;s family owned the ch\u00e2teau in the 19th century.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has also been awarded the &#8221; lot just opposite the entrance to the ch\u00e2teau grounds, on the church side, alongside the cemetery.\nAnother parking lot welcomes visitors a little further along the same side, opposite an expanse of grass equipped with picnic tables, on the banks of a small stream, the Ruisseau de Lecange. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" time to visit<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visit the Ch\u00e2teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet<strong> <\/strong>in <strong>spring<\/strong> or <strong>autumn<\/strong> is particularly pleasant.\nThe colors of the surrounding gardens and Normandy countryside make for a delightful backdrop. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summer is obviously busier.\nWe advise you to visit in the <strong>morning<\/strong> or <strong>late afternoon<\/strong>, for greater peace and quiet and to enjoy the softer, more oblique light. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And don&#8217;t ch\u00e2teau&#8217;s apartments, there&#8217;s a narrow stone <strong>spiral staircase<\/strong> in the south tower.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pets are not allowed inside the ch\u00e2teau.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" testifies to the refinement and wealth of the owners of the time. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The main gate and its two remarkable turrets<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other side of the footbridge that spans the moat and replaces the drawbridge, the ch\u00e2teau&#8217;s main entrance is topped by a sculpted portal featuring a <strong>psyche<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-TGcjJNF\/4\/KtKhKxXFXLt4ndcpfLTTBtd48pD8JSZvFsvKcnBQd\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1258-L.jpg\" alt=\"Turrets at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what we noticed first were the two admirable cylindrical turrets flanking the gate.\nWith their conical slate roofs, they add a surprisingly <strong>enchanting<\/strong> defensive touch. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-WzDSqvC\/4\/Ls6dT6vbtFNjM2gBfd9X8Wp5RmHjwVd3xZt3sMCgV\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1259-L.jpg\" alt=\"Roofs at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you approach, you can see the gable of the medieval manor house, like a <strong>thatched cottage<\/strong> attached to the castle.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exploring the historic pentagonal courtyard<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once through the front door, we entered the ch\u00e2teau&#8217;s courtyard, where we were treated to a number of surprises.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Renaissance arcade gallery<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found the arcaded gallery very attractive.\nIt, too, bears witness to the Italian influence in French Renaissance architecture.\nIt runs along the east wing of the ch\u00e2teau, from the <strong>entrance pavilion<\/strong> to the south tower.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-zZt2znX\/4\/NN7F5trdD9T6xFLKtGgWqwT93MGSJ6Zks8826RP94\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1261-L.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallery is composed of four sleek, <strong>basket-shaped coves<\/strong> resting on elegant columns.\nWe liked to imagine the castle&#8217;s occupants taking advantage of this sheltered circulation space. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-4m2RTb8\/4\/MKMrtRPwvqRQV5j27X4Tx4JHxtRXNKdL54tmGQx4f\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1267-L.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery over the arcades at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallery is very <strong>narrow<\/strong>, and from the courtyard we realized just how small the Renaissance part of the ch\u00e2teau was compared to the medieval part.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The timber-framed medieval manor house<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning to the medieval manor house next to the entrance pavilion, opposite the Renaissance building, we were surprised by its half-timbered facade.\nThey lend a <strong>bucolic thatched cottage<\/strong> style to the whole, and contrast with the much more sophisticated stone and brick facade. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-kDNchvN\/4\/NcbWnJH566s98vTLnhVrJSnnj5m4b5X8GBPh2ZRzg\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-5423-L.jpg\" alt=\"Courtyard of Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the oldest part of the ch\u00e2teau.\nIt dates from the 15th century.\nIt is highly emblematic of<strong>traditional Norman architecture<\/strong> of the late Middle Ages.\nWe love the half-timbering technique, with its wooden framework visible from the outside.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-6CphdHn\/4\/LchRPJf6VHWsfHzCzX9FJSNrwkXhkMqkKz3RNx7Rw\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1265-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cladding at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We particularly liked the west end of the building, with its grey wood <strong>cladding<\/strong>.\nIt&#8217;s also a magnificent structure that deserves attention. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A must-see tour of the museum and its treasures<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then went inside the ch\u00e2teau to discover the wonders of the museum.\nIt has been awarded the Mus\u00e9e de France label. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 16th-century frescoes in the Uffizi Room<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We loved these frescoes and, above all, their history.\nIn fact, they were recently discovered during restoration work.\nThey date back to the 16th century and were <strong>previously covered<\/strong> with plaster.\nThe restorers were thus able to bring to light these works of art that had been hidden for centuries.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-gb6tLs5\/4\/MjMmtq6f5DzPKrCgD7z7BW7CwHLKjZBtZn6NkVzjR\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1272-L.jpghttps:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-gb6tLs5\/4\/MjMmtq6f5DzPKrCgD7z7BW7CwHLKjZBtZn6NkVzjR\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1272-L.jpg\" <strong>mythology<\/strong>.\nOne of these, painted above a doorway, impressed us greatly.\nIt depicts the <strong>beheading of John the Baptist<\/strong>.\nAlthough we don&#8217;t see John the Baptist&#8217;s head on a plate, it does appear at the end of a spike.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-z9FwF6d\/4\/MRcDFWSNS7GTjCH72mcCDSgpbxJnmM8wT3gHMT9kn\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-5427-L.jpg\" alt=\"Frescoes at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 19th-century apartments of the Riesener-Pillaut family<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were able to appreciate the elegant decor of these apartments.\nThey are decorated with beautiful objects (crockery, tapestries, objets d&#8217;art).\nThe same is true of the furniture, some of which was made by the famous cabinetmaker <strong>Jean-Henri Riesener<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-RBkpgrc\/4\/NfSC7tgnLK5mJgWGRBD5z7hHPm3n7gGfgmpvqx3tQ\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1273-L.jpg\" alt=\"Dining room at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was the grandfather of the painter <strong>L\u00e9on Riesener <\/strong>, some of whose works can also be admired.\nL\u00e9on Reisener was a cousin of Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix, who painted his portrait.\nThe evocation of these illustrious names and the presence of the paintings add a notable <strong>artistic dimension<\/strong> to the visit.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-hNCqVT7\/4\/NfJHRGJ8Wcsrggfk6wqnnGWnLZsRH6rpgDz8g3TVM\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1276-L.jpg\" alt=\"Salon in the Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enchanted stroll through the flower-filled park<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We finished our visit by taking the spiral staircase of the <strong>tour du midi <\/strong>, then the arcaded gallery, before returning to the park.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The elegance of French gardens<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gardens are small in scale, but beautifully enhanced by the site&#8217;s vegetation and the presence of the ch\u00e2teau.\nThey are a perfect example of the elegance and <strong>symmetry<\/strong> typical of this style. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11f-St-Germain-de-Livet\/i-qzd6gNT\/4\/NfTJWB2PRfTW3qqJpTdd8HkHCC5tPZ9rPrDkdh74d\/L\/chateau_Saint_Germain_de_Livet_Normandie-1311-L.jpg\" alt=\"French garden at Ch&#xE2;teau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We loved the geometric flowerbeds, trimmed hedges and straight paths stretching along the foot of the immense willows.\nBenches have been installed in the garden, and we were able to take full advantage of the <strong>serenity<\/strong> it exudes. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The peaceful charm of a moat<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, the presence of the moat adds <strong>enchanting charm <\/strong>to this perfect setting.\nThey encircle the ch\u00e2teau and reflect its checkerboard facades of colored brick.\nThey create a <strong>natural mirror <\/strong>that enhances the beauty of the site tenfold.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" atmosphere of the park to the full.\nEspecially when a pair of <strong>swans<\/strong> came to introduce us to their young brood, magnificent baby swans enjoying the coolness of the water.
