The ch\u00e2teau is a masterpiece of <strong>medieval<\/strong> architecture, classified as <strong>a historic monument<\/strong>. The 15-hectare<strong>arboretum<\/strong> that serves as its backdrop is classified as an <strong>outstanding garden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In our opinion, this is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-castles-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful ch\u00e2teaux to visit in Normandy<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>You can now <a href=\"https:\/\/harcourt-normandie.fr\/billetterie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reserve your ticket<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can see<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bicentennial arboretum<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-2V8Vbkm\/4\/KpGkqjzh6VPpf85FM2rFMNHMMwCFRXBJ6xkMXMfmf\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1077-L.jpg\" alt=\"Arboretum of the Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We love trees, so strolling through the park before entering the ch\u00e2teau was a delight. The<strong>Harcourt arboretum<\/strong> is a place for <strong>collecting<\/strong> and<strong>acclimatizing<\/strong> numerous specimens, some of which are between 150 and 200 years old. More than <strong>500 species<\/strong> can be found here.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ch\u00e2telet or south gate<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-52SJPxd\/4\/LjZWCt2gmtZRHtTtPP6tmKg2B5wkTsPB7ntfBM8c6\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-5386-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ch&#xE2;telet du Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The entrance to the ch\u00e2teau is through the <strong>south gate<\/strong>, a <strong>ch\u00e2telet<\/strong>. A delightful little building giving access to the <strong>farmyard<\/strong>. We strolled along this large <strong>grassy platform<\/strong>, opposite the ch\u00e2teau dwelling. It is protected by an<strong> enclosure<\/strong> built of flint, of which <strong>5<\/strong> round <strong>towers<\/strong> remain (there were 12), half in ruins, pierced with loopholes.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The medieval castle<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-JmpH3JK\/4\/LffC7pxWsfcjd2mXC3QFz8CmN2MLz36jrcp3sthnk\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1090-L.jpg\" alt=\"Medieval dwelling at Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The <strong>ch\u00e2teau<\/strong> is tucked away behind another <strong>entrance ch\u00e2telet<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a compact, polygonal building. We saw the <strong>square keep<\/strong> to the north-west and the dwelling.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The drawbridge portcullis<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-RZcHZzk\/4\/Nhx9pPQFdgLFXprVNNkh25fdKz866xCxmgVh59H3D\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1097-L.jpg\" alt=\"Harrow and drawbridge at the Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>As we entered the castle itself, we passed over the footbridge that now replaces the <strong>drawbridge<\/strong>. The <strong>portcullis<\/strong> at the top of the entrance passage, above our heads, was particularly visible.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exhibiting the remains of the site<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-59vgT4W\/4\/KtcshjVv2qtBL9wF8cBxM9ZddcZKpm8s6BjFcpT9C\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1100-L.jpg\" alt=\"Exhibition of remains Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the entrance hall of the dwelling, we were able to visit an <strong>exhibition<\/strong>. It provides an insight into the history of this ancient <strong>fortified castle<\/strong> and its successive occupants. Objects recovered during its restoration in the late 80s, including <strong>ceramics<\/strong>, are on display.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The cut of a 16th-century cedar of Lebanon<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-ZwdGh6S\/4\/Mk2bBz79nrLj3PTjLwj8FwLvTSPhx9nnfhKZtLCXJ\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1104-L.jpg\" alt=\"Section of a Lebanese cedar at the Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The cutting of a <strong>Lebanese cedar<\/strong> is also on display. We were very interested. Trees, always trees! The number of rings in his eyes (294) dates his birth to the <strong>16th<\/strong> century. It comes from the mountains of the <strong>Near East<\/strong> and was donated by the <strong>Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;Histoire Naturelle in Paris<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The well and its squirrel cage<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-mm7HGM2\/4\/KbNhpXPhzKsfJtD6XQgZRbK2WWkLZ7nBHpgvB52Hc\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-5392-L.jpg\" alt=\"well and squirrel cage at the Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Against the wall of the dwelling, we found a <strong>well<\/strong> housed in a niche with a <strong>decorated vault<\/strong>, typical of the <strong>12th<\/strong> century. The shaft is equipped with a <strong>squirrel cage<\/strong>. This is a <strong>wheel<\/strong> system that allowed water buckets to be lifted by walking inside the wheel.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 17th-century fa\u00e7ade<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-J4XZpCR\/4\/MgVDZd3VpDqhxdSsGh6xh8STp4CSTBgMwdK5S7RL4\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1111-L.jpg\" alt=\"17th-century fa&#xE7;ade of the Ch&#xE2;teau du Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The ch\u00e2teau underwent modifications in the <strong>17th<\/strong> century. It has been given a new, <strong>classically styled<\/strong> interior facade, which we found very <strong>elegant<\/strong>, with its <strong>large windows<\/strong> overlooking the <strong>courtyard of honor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The double defensive moat<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R11b-Harcourt\/i-s2jpXbz\/4\/Nb3S6J8bjkP4bLLJHCZdQ9w6q3nNWFXmmtgFbM4rQ\/L\/chateau_Harcourt_Normandie-1119-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ditch at the Ch&#xE2;teau du Domaine d'Harcourt in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Leaving the ch\u00e2teau, we looked out over the park to see the <strong>surrounding wall<\/strong> with its towers.
