Founded in the 12th century in the narrow <strong>Fouillebroc<\/strong> valley, it was the first Cistercian abbey in <strong>Normandy<\/strong>. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a visit to Mortemer Abbey worthwhile?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Yes, Mortemer Abbey is well worth a visit for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Founded in 1134, it was the first Cistercian abbey in Normandy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The site is a formidable immersive experience thanks to its animations and historical re-enactments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The setting is absolutely magnificent, with forests, ruins and ponds, not to mention the historic Chemin des Ducs de Normandie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In our opinion, it&#8217;s one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-abbeys-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 most beautiful abbeys in Normandy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can see<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Abbey Palace<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-HJRF9KC\/4\/DdBwJ8ZGbfW7D5qp5hb3BPWBqscrmshknKXs7JcwW\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2-36-L.jpg\" alt=\"The west wing of the abbey palace at Mortemer Abbey in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The first thing you see on arrival is the departure of the west wing of the <strong>abbey palace<\/strong>. A late 18th-century building which we were unable to enter on our visit. Yet it is home to <strong>richly furnished rooms<\/strong> such as the Arcade Room, the Antiphonary Room, the Dining Room and the Chapel.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The museum of legends and ghosts<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-xbjZ3TR\/4\/Dj5rzFzZvfG7Kz5wFPpDL5TqnnmVHLWvgj8JvmXqP\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2-42-L.jpg\" alt=\"The south wing of the abbey palace and dovecote at Mortemer Abbey in Normandy.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The site has a reputation for being haunted! The abbey&#8217;s basement also houses a museum dedicated to its legends and ghosts. Several rooms have been converted to stage the many <strong>tales<\/strong> <strong>and legends<\/strong> associated with the abbey. It was used to feed the abbey&#8217;s inhabitants and visitors. Don&#8217;t miss the <strong>band of justice<\/strong> that runs around the building, as the father who ran the abbey was also a justice of the peace, dispensing justice for petty theft.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-Gc56gVZ\/4\/DqggjG4mmBSTXz5bF9BFQr6ZD3nRmCK258wvzh7C2\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2-43-L.jpg\" alt=\"Chestnut frame for the dovecote at Mortemer Abbey in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ruins of the abbey church<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-SKzwFHB\/4\/CT826K7PdwSVDzph4T55G5zW6Lr3kcZc9p277Gjq4\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2-48-L.jpg\" alt=\"The romantic ruins of the abbey church at Mortemer Abbey in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We loved the<strong>romantic atmosphere<\/strong> of the abbey ruins. The weather was blue on the day of our visit, but we loved imagining the place in misty weather, on a night with a full moon. The <strong>white lady<\/strong>, Mathilde, whose legend you will learn when you visit the museum, almost appeared to us!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remains of the transept<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-f9SjZRC\/4\/CwDP2Rqk8t49dV4c6SMdq7BkXWN7G2w3gwJHqKqvf\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2-56-L.jpg\" alt=\"Remains and transept of the abbey church at Mortemer Abbey, Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Some of the old abbey walls are still very high. The one that impressed us most was the one in the <strong>transept of<\/strong> the abbey church. It still seems to reign over the site, like a<strong> guardian<\/strong> of the temple, despite the assaults of time, the elements and history.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The east wall of the cloister<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-W84xbpt\/4\/FGqbZnDzLDVgsMLKXp6NtTcKMbfD9tpc8v2ZBJFgJ\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2612-L.jpg\" alt=\"East wall of the cloister at Mortemer Abbey, Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The <strong>cloister galleries<\/strong> have disappeared, leaving only a small brick section to the north, which we didn&#8217;t photograph. The high wall still standing on the east side features multiple openings that are now open to the sky. This was the monks&#8217; <strong>dormitory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 3 bays of the chapter house<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-8K4ZVsG\/4\/CDcN2dzc3M7dZpqxxsvDgFVK3cC5WvdkvM7c7c4V9\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2-57-L.jpg\" alt=\"3 bays in the chapter house at Mortemer Abbey in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We loved the access to the cloister garden from what was once the <strong>chapter house<\/strong>. The visitor trail passes through <strong>3 bays<\/strong>. The middle one serves as a passageway, while the other two have retained their Gothic facings.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The pillars of the nave<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-TJTfVMR\/4\/DXWJnp2Fp5PQwNpZrk6BnTX6RNfZZkjGPSNVVqghr\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-2608-L.jpg\" alt=\"Remains of the nave of Mortemer Abbey in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Not much remains of the abbey church&#8217;s great nave. We wandered between the ruins of the pillars, trying to imagine the original building and its vault above our heads.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The park and ponds<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R16f-Mortemer\/i-33bRkkR\/4\/FX4bzbK9FJGFSzkNbMszDZbPCR2mGzb2wTkrbk2dg\/L\/Abbaye_de_mortemer_Normandie-5703-L.jpg\" alt=\"The pond at Mortemer Abbey in Normandy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The park is magnificent. The nearby forest and two successive ponds make for an extremely pleasant and peaceful visit. There is a bus network in the area, but you&#8217;ll be limited in the number of times you can get to Lisors.
