Would you like to enjoy the wide-open spaces of Normandy’s beaches<\/strong> and learn more about the history of D-Day<\/strong>? With the remains of the artificial port Mulberry<\/strong>, created by the Allied forces, and its bunkers, Gold<\/strong> Beach in Arromanches<\/strong> is a must-see. Located between Asnelles<\/strong> and Ver-sur-Mer,<\/strong> on the C\u00f4te de Nacre<\/strong> in Calvados, it is surrounded by other major D-Day sites.<\/p>\n\n

Here are some useful tips<\/strong> for planning your visit to Gold Beach in Arromanches.<\/p>\n\n

Is Gold Beach worth it?<\/h2>\n\n

Gold Beach in Arromanches is less well known than Omaha Beach. However, it’s well worth a visit. It provides a better understanding of the landings, particularly from the point of view of the British troops. A fantastic opportunity to appreciate the scale of the artificial port of Arromanches (known as Mulberry) and its role in the liberation of France at the end of the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n

Type of beach<\/h2>\n\n

Sand or no sand?<\/h3>\n\n

Most of the beach is covered at high tide<\/strong>. It’s made of fine golden sand and… damp. Ideal for beach activities such as sand yachting<\/strong> or electric fat bikes<\/strong>. It’s also great for hours of walking or running: the beach stretches for over 10 km!<\/p>\n\n

A few small pebbled areas remain accessible at high tide, at the foot of the cliffs.<\/p>\n\n

Swimming conditions and supervision<\/h3>\n\n

The slope is gentle<\/strong>, but the waters of Gold Beach are deep<\/strong>. The tide rises quickly and currents<\/strong> can be strong, although rocks and relics are ideal for snorkeling<\/strong>. During the summer, bathing areas are indicated and supervised<\/strong> by qualified SNSM lifeguards. Each area has its own first-aid post: Ver-sur-Mer, Asnelles, Graye-sur-Mer. Installations<\/h3>\n\n

We visited Gold Beach out of season and didn’t find any beachside showers or toilets. Nevertheless, there are several public toilets<\/strong> in town, including one near the village hall. Find out more here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

On the other hand, many observation points<\/strong> offer binoculars for a better view of the remains of the artificial harbour in the distance, which appear at low tide.<\/p>\n\n
