Founded in the 11th century, the abbey was a flourishing <strong>intellectual and spiritual center<\/strong>. Despite the ravages of time and conflict, many of the original buildings still stand today. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit Saint-Vigor Abbey in Cerisy-la-For\u00eat?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Cerisy-la-For\u00eat Abbey worth it? Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>Yes, Cerisy Abbey is well worth a visit. In fact, we&#8217;ve included it in our selection of <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-abbeys-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the most beautiful abbeys in Normandy<\/a>, for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Its fascinating history<\/strong> dates back to the 6th century, when Vigor, then Bishop of Bayeux, had a monastery built. It was destroyed during Viking raids in the 9th and 10th centuries. It wasn&#8217;t until the end of the 11th century that the abbey church, dedicated to Saint-Vigor, was built.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Its unique architecture:<\/strong> A major example of Norman Romanesque architecture, we learned that it served as a model for the construction of many of England&#8217;s churches after the Conquest. The three-storey apse, pierced by fifteen windows, is unique in the world and lends the monument exceptional power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Saint-Gerbold&#8217;s Chapel:<\/strong> located above the abbey&#8217;s entrance porch, the abbot&#8217;s chapel is a late 13th-century Gothic construction. It is reminiscent in scale of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, and features 15th-century painted decorations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-KkbvCvJ\/3\/DQXZRGzDgB2PDp7TTSgmDF2NxgB7WwmsQC7hnxQZC\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-6082-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Vigor Abbey in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is Cerisy-la-For\u00eat famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Cerisy Abbey is famous as<strong>one of the oldest<\/strong> and most important abbeys in Normandy. As a <strong>spiritual, intellectual and economic center<\/strong>, it played an important role in the region&#8217;s medieval history.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was also a <strong>royal abbey<\/strong>. This means that she was under the protection of the King of France and benefited from his gifts and favors. It has welcomed several of them in the course of its history (Henri II, Henri IV, Louis XVIII, among others). They stayed there when they travelled to Normandy.<\/p>\n\n<p>Its remarkable architecture also contributes to its reputation. We were very impressed by its <strong>3-level elevation<\/strong> and the 15 windows in its apse, making it a unique monument of unrivalled luminosity. The<strong>abbey church<\/strong> has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1840, making it one of the first buildings to be recognized as part of France&#8217;s national heritage. The whole is particularly imposing, giving the monument exceptional power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether admired from the outside or inside, the<strong>3-level apse<\/strong> is unique. We were captivated by the clarity it brings to the interior space. The atmosphere is particularly conducive to meditation and prayer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, the 13th-century <strong>Chapelle Saint-Gerbold<\/strong>, also known as the Abbot&#8217;s Chapel, is a marvel of Norman Gothic art. We particularly liked the access to the chapel via its richly decorated loggia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-GBGZ6bW\/4\/2BnhSMfdDPGg8GJhbWd7mXNzZk27xfCVX2rZLMNJ\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4961-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor at Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, west fa&#xE7;ade\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History in brief<\/h3>\n\n<p>Around 510, the hermit <strong>Vigor<\/strong>, future bishop of Bayeux, founded the primitive abbey, probably on the remains of a Druid temple. From the early <sup>9th<\/sup> century onwards, it came under attack from <strong>Viking raiders<\/strong>. Plundered and finally destroyed, it wasn&#8217;t until the early 11th century that a new abbey was built, under the leadership of <strong>William the Conqueror<\/strong> and his father.<\/p>\n\n<p>It became a <strong>royal abbey<\/strong> in the 13th century. Numerous royal endowments enabled major works to be carried out, including the construction of the <strong>Abbot&#8217;s Chapel<\/strong>. Various congregations succeeded one another within the walls of the abbey, which survived, not without damage, the 100 Years&#8217; War and the War of Religions.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was finally <strong>dismantled during the French Revolution<\/strong>, which drove out the last 7 monks. But the colors of autumn are also magnificent, with the forest nearby, and springs in Normandy can also be delicious.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cerisy-la-For\u00eat Abbey is closed for the winter season, from early November to early April. As we entered the site, we were shown a <strong>film<\/strong> <strong>about the abbey<\/strong>. But what intrigued us most as soon as we entered was the abbey&#8217;s blind facade to the west, and the austerity of the transept on the south side.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The blind fa\u00e7ade and austere south transept<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>The blind facade of the abbey church<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>This is the facade in front of you from the parking lot. It&#8217;s actually a <strong>partition<\/strong> that once separated parishioners from monks. It allowed the latter to celebrate mass without crossing paths with the former. The bays reserved for parishioners were demolished in the early 19th century, leaving this blind partition as a new fa\u00e7ade, which piqued our curiosity.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-R8ddfqZ\/4\/CNfzwrBt7dPkGftqvCR5D5MFZ3mrxhx4svGMSwHjX\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4933-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, facades of the abbey church\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The austerity of the transept<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Once past the entrance porch, the <strong>imposing mass of the transept <\/strong>with its 3 high windows can be seen on the left, on the south side. She made a big impression on us. Especially as it is topped by the massive, square silhouette of<strong> the lantern tower<\/strong>. The whole perfectly expresses the building&#8217;s overwhelming <strong>religious authority<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-82QLZC9\/4\/DD3NLhLpgFjFSpfV4xxCjBqG2cKqttbpqJcz5qx9g\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4944-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, facades and transept of the abbey church\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The richness of the eastern chevet<\/h3>\n\n<p>As we walked around the building, we were surprised by the many architectural details of the east-facing chevet. They contrast with the sobriety of the south fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The 3 levels of the apse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The apse has <strong>3 levels of bays<\/strong> that particularly caught our eye. In fact, this is the only layout of its kind in Romanesque art anywhere in the world. The apse was reinforced in the 14th<sup>century <\/sup>. The <strong>reinforcement buttresses<\/strong> are clearly visible. Some high windows have been modified in Gothic style.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-qDs4BWq\/4\/DJfQkPtQ73b3KC73MxSf9sDgpGMFf5ncjP672Xxgw\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4955-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, chevet\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The flamboyant style of the apsidal openings and the chartrier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>On either side of the chevet, we particularly appreciated the <strong>2-storey absidioles<\/strong> with their wide, flamboyant-style openings. The <strong>circular chartrier<\/strong> on the south side also features 15th-century windows.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-b2vxCrb\/4\/DnkMgT8GbG4Kf2v75GD2GmZMzrZK7PchgvFJRZWNk\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-6083-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, apse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The 2 bell towers of the gable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>On either side of the apse gable, we particularly liked the slender silhouettes of the <strong>2 bell towers<\/strong>, as well as the series of Romanesque-style <strong>gargoyles<\/strong> and <strong>modillions<\/strong> around the chevet roofs.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-kVNb5tP\/0\/CSfGRJ8zWSQPJgNKXRWx5QKZvX3MhqBnGwhGVs9tb\/L\/gargouilles-morillons-cerisy-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Vigor Abbey in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, gargoyles and modillions\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continuation of the tour: inside the Abbey Church of Saint-Vigor<\/h2>\n\n<p>As we entered the abbey church, we were immediately enveloped by the solemn atmosphere of the place, where architectural power offers a deeply immersive experience.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under the vaults of the nave<\/h3>\n\n<p>The nave of the abbey church is renowned for its <strong>generous dimensions<\/strong>, creating an impression of space and grandeur. Built to a <strong>Benedictine plan<\/strong>, it comprises <strong>3 elevations<\/strong>: arcades, tribunes and high windows with their gallery. Its vast proportions create a particularly majestic atmosphere that had us spellbound.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-RKzxrqn\/4\/FBrcFrSK6dtCMm4MTPKpd6czRNJz7bqkk8rJK6pLh\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4952-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, nave from the transept\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 40m long transept<\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong>dimensions of the transept<\/strong> of Cerisy Abbey Church make it the largest Romanesque church in Normandy. The north arm of the transept was rebuilt in the 18th century, but the south arm is original. We really liked the <strong>flat, framed ceiling<\/strong> above the grandstand.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-ZRbHPRB\/4\/C2Scf5RhtKr3F8xXqg8xvW7VKTMN7b3tJFnwRKbXs\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4950-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, north transept\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 15 windows of the apse<\/h3>\n\n<p>With its <strong>15 Romanesque windows on 3 levels<\/strong> and its couri\u00e8res on the upper 2 levels, the magnificent apse of the Abbey Church of Saint-Vigor is unique. Facing east, these openings provide <strong>abundant light<\/strong> from the choir. The apse immediately catches the visitor&#8217;s eye, and we spent a long time contemplating it, almost hypnotized by such beauty.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-CPwB3qQ\/4\/Dn542RfsGxcVSCmLMX9dkVpQJGGSVCXTKDpJQFJKT\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-6081-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, apse from the nave\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Raising the choir<\/h3>\n\n<p>The choir of the abbey church is also on 3 levels. We really enjoyed the <strong>40 wooden stalls<\/strong> on the first level. They are the oldest stalls in Normandy. Above, you can see the large <strong>paired bays<\/strong> on the second level, followed by the small <strong>triple bays<\/strong> with windows on the third, which bring a little light into the shadow of the choir.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-3nw3S3M\/4\/C53kG4cqQQzjGNQvGr2ChJBnL3LnB4fCx4HN7q4k\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4951-L.jpg\" alt=\"Abbaye Saint-Vigor in Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t, choir\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">End of visit: convent buildings and gatehouse<\/h2>\n\n<p>As we made our way out of the site, we visited what remains of the convent buildings and gatehouse, as well as the Abbot&#8217;s Chapel, which enchanted us.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saint-Gerbold&#8217;s chapel and loggia<\/h3>\n\n<p>The chapel is a little marvel. It is reminiscent in scale of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, and features <strong>15th-century painted decorations<\/strong>. It was built thanks to a gift from <strong>Saint-Louis<\/strong>, who was on his way to <strong>Mont-Saint-Michel<\/strong>. We loved the access staircase and its <strong>loggia-shaped<\/strong> landing, richly decorated with capitals and a rose window.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-kXtLDhH\/4\/DNRG8Mm87PpsS2Ds3TjGBkm4WNkpq7kFTQLMf55kG\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4966-L.jpg\" alt=\"loggia of the Chapelle Saint-Gerbold at Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t abbey\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The chapel is rectangular in plan. At the end, on the south side, the<strong>3-sided apse<\/strong> is spectacular. It is lit by high windows. Its vaults are adorned with keys decorated with <strong>coats of arms<\/strong>. We recognized the lilies of the Capetian monarchy and the Norman leopards.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-3tK99nw\/4\/dXFSsGZ5cjkPTSFJ7GzhrkmPqm5sKKJtzxpt2dZL\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4969-L.jpg\" alt=\"apse of the Chapelle Saint-Gerbold at Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t abbey\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hall of Justice<\/h3>\n\n<p>A wooden staircase separates the chapel from the <sup>13th-century<\/sup> <strong>Salle de Justice<\/strong>. By papal decree, the abbot had the right of high and low justice. He also made administrative decisions concerning the abbey&#8217;s many properties. The room now houses the monks&#8217; <strong>furniture<\/strong>, documents and <strong>manuscripts<\/strong>. On the ceiling, we noticed the famous<strong> scales, symbolizing justice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R21f-Cerisy\/i-k6nWHBc\/4\/FDrGGswCDCFCsMBgQJ75hkG2mk22zZJ9L4DKFXVQk\/L\/abbaye_cerisy_la_foret_Normandie-4973-L.jpg\" alt=\"Salle de Justice, Chapelle Saint-Gerbold at Cerisy-la-For&#xEA;t Abbey\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The remains of the towers, the underground passages and the lapidary museum<\/h3>\n\n<p>To the south of the chapel, the remains of the towers can be seen on the south fa\u00e7ade, with its <strong>buttresses<\/strong> and <strong>double-glazed windows<\/strong>. We learned that a network of <strong>underground passages<\/strong> leads to the monk&#8217;s pond, the forest and a nearby farm, but we weren&#8217;t able to visit them.
