Covered Market<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-MhvFRVx\/1\/af8ff4c4\/L\/marche_etretat_normandie-6850-L.jpg\" alt=\"Covered market Etretat\" title=\"Covered market Etretat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s start with the market place. It is a closed place called &#8220;Covered Market&#8221;. Today, there are souvenir stores.<br\/>It is a wooden structure dating from 1926. Before, a farm was located here.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-trfdnFP\/1\/d3321beb\/L\/marche_etretat_normandie-6846-L.jpg\" alt=\"Covered market Etretat 2\" title=\"Covered market Etretat 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Manor of the Salamander<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-FwkzSQv\/1\/f991ee75\/L\/ville_etretat_normandie-6838-L.jpg\" alt=\"Etretat old manor\" title=\"Etretat old manor\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most impressive building in the city center is located between the Casino and the Market Square. Don&#8217;t forget to look up!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a rather intriguing building with wood, colored shingles and a strange shape. It was built by copying a medieval house from another town (the Plantefor house in Lisieux) which was destroyed in 1899. It is not an exact replica, but it has retained the general appearance.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Architecture<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will find some other half-timbered houses typical of Normandy, but also many two-colored brick houses of the 20th century, also typical of the region.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-fwfStj7\/1\/cd846f39\/L\/etretat_normandie-6852-L.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture Etretat 1\" title=\"Architecture Etretat 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-cV6jXGh\/1\/fb1210aa\/L\/etretat_normandie-6862-L.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture Etretat 2\" title=\"Architecture Etretat 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The church of Etretat &#8211; Notre Dame de l&#8217;Assomption<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little further from the beach, you will find the main church of Etretat (not to be confused with the famous chapel on top of the cliff).<br\/>It is not one of the tourist places. The castle of Aygues<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c9tretat also has a small castle. Two queens of Spain have enjoyed this place on several occasions.<br\/>It was built in the mid-19th century and overlooks the city. It is now a protected historical building.<br\/>It can be visited in the afternoon in summer, but it may be closed some weeks. Walk along the beach<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole city revolves around the beach. The waterfront is bounded by high, straight cliffs on either side.<br\/>There is a wide walkway to get from one end to the other with beautiful views in all directions.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-PdMxSXV\/1\/ac474699\/L\/promenade_etretat_normandie-6981-L.jpg\" alt=\"The sea front of Etretat\" title=\"The sea front of Etretat\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The sea front of Etretat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you can go down to the beach itself.<br\/>Just be aware that it is a pebble beach, so if you are not used to it, it might not be so easy to walk on. Although the pebbles are not as big as<a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-things-to-do-le-havre-normandy\/\">in Le Havre<\/a>, I find it a little easier.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recommend you to visit it at low tide and at high tide, because it looks completely different. It&#8217;s even better with a few clouds!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-Mj2dchr\/1\/6a344b85\/L\/promenade_etretat_normandie-6985-L.jpg\" alt=\"Etretat art\" title=\"Etretat art\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And don&#8217;t miss the sunset!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/France\/Normandy\/i-KXMThdF\/4\/82266f76\/L\/IMG_4226-L.jpg\" alt=\"Watching sunset in Etretat\" title=\"Watching sunset in Etretat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-11\">Falaise d&#8217;Aval and Aiguille Creuse &#8211; what to see in \u00c9tretat<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let&#8217;s get serious and go explore those cliffs.<br\/>Let&#8217;s start with the southern cliffs, known as the &#8220;Falaise d&#8217;Aval&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Climbing the side of the cliff<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-hxV3Fxw\/1\/a1072cad\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6890-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of the town of Etretat\" title=\"View of the town of Etretat\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>View on the town of Etretat<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no roads leading to it, so no tourist trains to help you. You have to walk.<br\/>From the beach promenade, there is a staircase up the cliffs before reaching the walking path.<br\/>However, if you want to avoid these stairs, you can choose to walk down the street of Dr. de Miramont from the parking lot and you can reach the first observation platform with 0 steps.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The climb to the top is steep but not long. Make the effort, it&#8217;s worth it!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way to the top, you will find two observation platforms where you can enjoy the city, the beach and the northern cliffs.<br\/>You will also notice the old oyster farm below you (it dates from the 18th century and Marie-Antoinette loved these oysters).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-s9MWvCR\/1\/9bd5b39d\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6885-L.jpg\" alt=\"oyster farm of Etretat\" title=\"oyster farm of Etretat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Around the Aiguille Creuse<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once at the top, you can explore the surroundings of the hollow needle.<br\/>Here, the cliffs are 80 m high. And there are views in all directions.<br\/>This is the closest you can get to these spiky formations that have been turned into a fort. You can take a second bridge to access a small cave called &#8220;The damsel room&#8221;. Legends of ghosts surround it.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-9zSHVj6\/1\/9f97d250\/L\/aiguille_creuse_etretat_normandie-6903-L.jpg\" alt=\"Etretat cliffs 2\" title=\"Etretat cliffs 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the top of the Porte d&#8217;Aval, you also have a beautiful view of the other giant arch of Etretat: Manneporte.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-PMNs8p6\/1\/653c3a53\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6900-L.jpg\" alt=\"Etretat cliffs Manneport arch\" title=\"Etretat cliffs Manneport arch\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you continue walking south, you will have a better view of the sea, known as L&#8217;Aiguille creuse.<br\/>It is 55 m high (for the moment, but the erosion continues).<br\/>It became famous thanks to the adventures of the fictional character Ars\u00e8ne Lupin, invented by Maurice Leblanc. He was supposed to have hidden a treasure inside.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-j7Tbwwm\/1\/3ead3c66\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6927-L.jpg\" alt=\"The hollow needle\" title=\"The hollow needle\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>The hollow needle, Etretat<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Continue to the top of Manneporte<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recommend that you continue walking a little further south. Until Manneporte.<br\/>You can walk over it.<br\/>This is the best place to appreciate the needle and the main arch of Etretat, in my opinion.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-bWvJqq4\/1\/b95c6b36\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6939-L.jpg\" alt=\"cliffs of Etretat 3\" title=\"cliffs of Etretat 3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you look in the opposite direction, you can see more cliffs and on a clear day, you can notice the Antifer lighthouse in the distance.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-PJ8vtdr\/1\/65dbb9c4\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6945-L.jpg\" alt=\"cliffs of Etretat Antifer\" title=\"cliffs of Etretat Antifer\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Bottom step to the cave &#8220;Trou de l&#8217;Homme<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ATTENTION &#8211; <\/strong>access to the &#8220;Trou de l&#8217;Homme&#8221; is now <strong>forbidden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At low tide, you can also explore these formations at water level. Always start your walk at least 1 hour before low tide to have time to return.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will first reach the oyster park and then, by a ladder, you will be able to go up a little and reach the &#8220;manhole&#8221; cave where a man survived after a shipwreck in 1792.<br\/>This hiking path also allows you to pass under the cliff and access the next beach with an impressive view of Manneporte.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"tab-con-7\">Falaise d&#8217;Amont &#8211; Chapel and Gardens of Etretat<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let&#8217;s go north. It&#8217;s a completely different experience.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I get on?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, we have to go up. The road is now closed to all but the people who live here.<br\/>You have 3 options:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the tourist train in summer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take the walking path that starts at the end of the waterfront (with steep stairs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walk on the road via Jules Gerbeau street and then Damilaville avenue (no stairs, steep but less than the walking path)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-plage-et-centre\/i-gfDjfHx\/1\/a5b8e74b\/L\/ville_etretat_normandie-6595-L.jpg\" alt=\"Acces Falaise d'Amont Etretat 1\" title=\"Acces Falaise d'Amont Etretat 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-aval\/i-TPGVPzT\/1\/31aa4589\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6868-L.jpg\" alt=\"Acces Falaise d'Amont Etretat 2\" title=\"Acces Falaise d'Amont Etretat 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the top, you can enjoy the most famous view but also some attractions.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-WPSxhf6\/1\/e13ad83c\/L\/notre_dame_garde_eglise_etretat_normandie-6667-L.jpg\" alt=\"Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Etretat\" title=\"Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Etretat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chapel is often the one that people have in mind when they say &#8220;the church of Etretat&#8221;.<br\/>It was first built around 1855 and is dedicated to the Holy Virgin. However, it was destroyed in 1942 by the Germans and a new one was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1950 (with a very different style).<br\/>It is considered a chapel for the sailors who protect them from the top of the cliffs. Notice the fish-shaped gargoyles.<br\/>One of the most beautiful chapels in Normandy<a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-normandy-cathedral-church\/\">(see our list<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Admire the view<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-xKVtQWv\/1\/e3d69385\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6673-L.jpg\" alt=\"Best view on Etretat\" title=\"Best view on Etretat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the front of the chapel, you have a splendid view of the beach with the gray pebbles, the town on the left and the southern cliffs on the right with the first arch and the needle. I can sit there for hours looking at the view!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Monument to Nungesser and Coli<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-2mt8VfT\/1\/7698c20c\/L\/nungesser_coli_etretat_normandie-6657-L.jpg\" alt=\"Monument to Nungesser and Coli\" title=\"Monument to Nungesser and Coli\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another attraction next to the chapel is the Monument dedicated to Nungesser and Coli. They were war heroes of French aviation and attempted the first non-stop flight between Paris and New York. But their plane L&#8217;Oiseau Blanc disappeared in 1927. And its history remains a mystery.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This 24 m spire was erected in 1963. And in my opinion, it fits perfectly with the church tower and the cliff top.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18. Visit the Gardens of Etretat<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-m4BCXqs\/1\/b627d1f3\/L\/jardins_etretat_normandie-6623-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Gardens of Etretat 2\" title=\"The Gardens of Etretat 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I recommend you to visit the gardens of Etretat. This attraction combines art and nature.<br\/>You&#8217;ll find a historic collection of Madame Th\u00e9bault&#8217;s plants, beautiful trees and thought-provoking artwork.<br\/>I think the most famous (and most photographed) are the &#8220;Raindrops&#8221;. These are 7 sculptures by artist Samuel Salcedo that focus on the range of human emotions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/billets-les-jardins-d-etretat-l168054\/?partner=region_lovers&amp;tq_campaign=NL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Reserve your entrance<\/a><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-Lgtxgcg\/1\/73488c38\/L\/jardins_etretat_normandie-6632-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Gardens of Etretat 3\" title=\"The Gardens of Etretat 3\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>&#8220;Raindrops&#8221; by Samuel Salcedo<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19. Continue the adventure by going down the cliff<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you can continue walking north to enjoy the cliffs.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-3ksrv7S\/1\/3799336d\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6713-L.jpg\" alt=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 1\" title=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a few minutes of walking, you will find a staircase.<br\/>If the weather is clear, and even if you don&#8217;t go all the way down, I recommend that you go down to the first observation platform (if you think you can get back up).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-tTcRt49\/1\/6721ad89\/L\/randonnee_etretat_normandie-6725-L.jpg\" alt=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 2\" title=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-sdNWc7z\/1\/32e462d0\/L\/randonnee_etretat_normandie-6726-L.jpg\" alt=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 3\" title=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why? Because you can see the coast and its cliffs quite far. That&#8217;s pretty impressive.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-fvntrsJ\/1\/6ffb5bec\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6733-L.jpg\" alt=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 4\" title=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 4\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, from now on, I must stop you.<br\/>If you want to continue this adventure, know that :<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. You should only go there at low tide<br\/>2. You must be ready to go through a tunnel and down a ladder and a pebble wall to get back to town (or back the way you came).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rest of the path is quite steep and narrow. You walk inside the side of the cliff.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-jxWf8Nb\/1\/e6ba0d9a\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6749-L.jpg\" alt=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 5\" title=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 5\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once at the bottom, you will find the tunnel. But before crossing it, I recommend you to explore this side. If you move forward, there is a great view of the North Arch (which I must have missed because I was alone and was afraid my ankles weren&#8217;t strong enough for the terrain &#8211; I often twist them).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-GWNpn6F\/1\/efba547d\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6759-L.jpg\" alt=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 6\" title=\"Falaise d'Amont Etretat 6\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After enjoying the view, it&#8217;s time to walk back to town.<br\/>You can cross the tunnel under the cliff. It is called &#8220;Cauldron tunnel&#8221;. The entrance looks low, but you don&#8217;t have to bend over much afterwards.<br\/>Then there is a ladder to reach the beach and a wall of pebbles to reach the water level. If you don&#8217;t trust the pebbles, sit down.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-vWmjsBK\/1\/e268b73e\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6761-L.jpg\" alt=\"cauldron tunnel\" title=\"cauldron tunnel\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Etretat-falaise-amont\/i-L52ksDP\/1\/a61040ee\/L\/falaises_etretat_normandie-6766-L.jpg\" alt=\"cauldron tunnel 2\" title=\"cauldron tunnel 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20.
