The construction of the present abbey began in the 10th century and continued over a long period. It was modified and restored until the 19th century.<br\/>It became a religious and cultural center during the medieval period. It was known as the &#8220;City of Books&#8221;.<br\/>This is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-things-to-do-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must-see visits of Normandy<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit &#8211;<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Mont-Saint-Michel is a <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/fr\/list\/80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Unesco listed site<\/a>, the whole fortified island is an incredible site not to be missed.<br\/>And the abbey is well worth the climb and the visit. The structure is massive at the top of the block. Given the location, this is a real technical challenge!<br\/>It offers splendid views of the surrounding bays. But it was burned by the Vikings in the 9th century.<br\/>Reconstruction began in the 9th century under the Duke of Normandy and a new church was consecrated in the 11th century with William the Conqueror, when it was at the height of its influence.<br\/>Today you can see the ruins of various elements of the 9th to 17th century.<br\/>The place ceased to be a monastery during the French Revolution, leaving it in ruins.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit &#8211;<\/h3>\n\n<p>Jumi\u00e8ges is the most famous of all the abbeys around the Seine.
