Walk around the old port<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-FkTr86m\/1\/0158eaa9\/L\/Honfleur_vieux_port-6289-L.jpg\" alt=\"Honfleur old port 1\" title=\"Honfleur old port 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, the port was built only as a place for trade. A safe port on the estuary of one of the main French rivers: the Seine.<br\/>Yet the city has inspired many generations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a unique place, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-things-to-do-normandie\/\">best places in Normandy<\/a>. The surrounding buildings are surprising: they are narrow and high, with facades of different colors. They seem to be huddled together. It&#8217;s fun to admire. If you are lucky and there is no wind, you can even see reflections in the water. Saint Catherine&#8217;s Church, a must-see<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-PDTJ8QC\/1\/4a21ca14\/L\/Honfleur_eglise_sainte_catherine_France-6227-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sainte-Catherine church Honfleur 1\" title=\"Sainte-Catherine church Honfleur 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This church is not to be missed. It is a jewel.<br\/>The church is entirely built of wood, which is rare in France.<br\/>Take time to look at the exterior with the roof and sides partially covered with chestnut shingles. Note also the shape of the bell tower, separated from the church (to protect parishioners in the event of fire).<br\/>Then go inside. What do you notice?<br\/>It looks like an upside-down boat. This is due to the fact that the first nave was built according to naval techniques in the second half of the 15th century.<br\/>It is a phenomenal building to admire. Panorama of Mont-Joli<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Autour-Honfleur\/i-DfNxFC5\/1\/5df996ee\/L\/Honfleur_panorama_mont_joli-6485-L.jpg\" alt=\"Panorama of Mont-Joli\" title=\"Panorama of Mont-Joli\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is still partly a secret for tourists. We hesitate to share it here but we love it so much; we love seeing cities from above.<br\/>This viewpoint offers the best view in the area: you can see all the roofs of the old center and you can see the Normandy bridge!<br\/>If you arrive by car, be aware that the roads are narrow and there is not much room to park.<br\/>If you walk, the path is not paved and is a bit steep.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Autour-Honfleur\/i-XCshvdS\/1\/0b1007f2\/L\/Honfleur_panorama_mont_joli-6504-L.jpg\" alt=\"Panorama of Mont-Joli Honfleur\" title=\"Panorama of Mont-Joli Honfleur\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Upstream from Honfleur, in Equemauville &#8211; it can be reached by car via the D62, or by taking the small footpath called &#8220;c\u00f4te de Gr\u00e2ce&#8221; after the rue du Puits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access on foot or by car<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The Lieutenancy<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-fgsjN3M\/1\/e679be26\/L\/Honfleur_lieutenance-6391-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Lieutenancy\" title=\"The Lieutenancy\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lieutenancy building marks the entrance to the port. It is an 18th century building. It was the house of the governor of the region. Rue des petites boucheries + Rue de la prison<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-nGz3SrT\/1\/c889d047\/L\/Honfleur_rue_petites_boucheries-6346-L.jpg\" alt=\"Rue des petites boucheries 1\" title=\"Rue des petites boucheries 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a street not to be missed where you will find the incredible old house of the Museum of Ethnography (explanation in the museum section). Walking down this street is like traveling back in time.<br\/>The name comes from the 17th century, when butchers&#8217; stalls lined the street.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-gNZkmH9\/1\/c30ad329\/L\/Honfleur_musee_ethonographie-6358-L.jpg\" alt=\"Rue des petites boucheries 2\" title=\"Rue des petites boucheries 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The street of the small butcheries, which continues in the street of the prison<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between the salt lofts and the marine museum, on one side of the old port<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Saint Leonard&#8217;s district and church<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-cgqvSNx\/1\/e4d98b84\/L\/Honfleur_eglise_st-Leonard-6314-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Leonard church 1\" title=\"Saint-Leonard church 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enjoy the streets of this little-visited district, with its old houses and the facade of its flamboyant Gothic church. The church was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries.<br\/>Note the octagonal bell tower from 1760 and the paintings inside the church from the 19th century.<br\/>Next to this church is the rue Bourdet where Eug\u00e8ne Boudin was born.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-qRPVpPv\/1\/029bac99\/L\/Honfleur_eglise_st-Leonard-6326-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Leonard church 2\" title=\"Saint-Leonard church 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Behind the old port, behind the tourist center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ground is easier in this area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-sqQH3Tt\/1\/0f528777\/L\/Honfleur_quartier_st-Leonard-6312-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Leonard district  \" title=\"Saint-Leonard district  \"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>House in the St L\u00e9onard district<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Salt lofts<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-ZBkm6KF\/1\/f15a2a0a\/L\/Honfleur_rue_petites_boucheries-6341-L.jpg\" alt=\"Salt lofts\" title=\"Salt lofts\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were 3 granaries but only 2 remain today. They contained 11,000 tons of salt used to preserve fish. They were built in the 17th century.<br\/>Today, they are used as an exhibition hall.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rue de la Ville, parallel to the port on the left-hand side when looking inland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. 47 Rue de l&#8217;homme de bois<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Honfleur\/i-VVnWSSQ\/1\/33c1cd40\/L\/Honfleur_architecture-6277-L.jpg\" alt=\"Street of the wooden man\" title=\"Street of the wooden man\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people explore Honfleur, they often go to the Eugene Boudin Museum but stop here to go back down to town. Don&#8217;t do that! It was completed and lit for the first time in 1857. It was not intended to indicate the entrance to the harbor, but to guide ships around the Ratier sandbar in the estuary.<br\/>It was decommissioned in 1908 when the Butin lighthouse was built. It has inspired many painters.<br\/>15 min walk from the old center.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Chapel of Our Lady of Grace<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Autour-Honfleur\/i-kjGWG6F\/1\/80202d6c\/L\/Honfleur_chapelle_Notre_dame_de_Grace-6464-L.jpg\" alt=\"Chapel of Our Lady of Grace Honfleur\" title=\"Chapel of Our Lady of Grace\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in the 17th century, this chapel is richly decorated with paintings and models of ships offered ex voto by sailors.<br\/>It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.<br\/>Notice that the bells are located just outside without a bell tower.<br\/>The nearby belvedere offers a beautiful view of the estuary.<br\/>Located on the plateau de Gr\u00e2ce above Honfleur.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-11\">16. Naturospace<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/Autour-Honfleur\/i-XcChpvs\/1\/9fe73691\/L\/Honfleur_naturospace-6521-L.jpg\" alt=\"Naturospace\" title=\"Naturospace\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is such a fun attraction! DO NOT WEAR HEELS!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow sufficient time to walk slowly and explore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can see the center of the old city in a few hours, but if you want to see more and visit the museums, plan at least two days. One is a little further away and cheaper, but it is not so far to walk to the old town<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free parking is available on the other side of town, near the Naturospace attraction. It is a 15-minute walk from the old town.
