The fortress features a square structure, circular tower and ramparts.<br\/>From here you can also see its position on the rocky outcrop overlooking the city. It features three keeps, ramparts and towers. The main keep, known as the Donjon Guillaume, is the oldest and tallest.<br\/>The panels tell you more about the town&#8217;s development in the 11th and 12th centuries, thanks to its crafts: flour mills, tanners, leatherworking&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening hours: Free access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: Free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Must-see: William the Conqueror&#8217;s castle<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1c-Chateau-Guillaume-Le-conquerant\/i-rdcKW4h\/4\/966fa064\/L\/Chateau_Guillaume_le_Conquerant_Falaise_normandie-7502-L.jpg\" alt=\"augmented reality tablet at the Falaise museum\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>William the Conqueror&#8217;s castle in Falaise is a must-see for history and culture (and technology) lovers.  <br\/>This fortified castle, built in the 11th century, is one of the most important medieval fortresses in France. It&#8217;s one of the most austere we&#8217;ve visited, and one of the most fascinating in Normandy<a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-castles-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(see our list of ch\u00e2teaux<\/a>).<br\/>Today, it houses a museum retracing the history of the castle and of William the Conqueror, who conquered England in 1066.<\/p>\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, the castle museum offers an immersive, interactive tour that lets you discover what the museum was like thanks to tablets that enable augmented reality.<br\/>In one of the rooms you&#8217;ll also find miniatures of some of the equipment used to defend the castle, and the tablet lets you see them in action.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., every day except a few days a year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: \u20ac9.50 for adults, \u20ac5 for children, free for children under 6.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the latest news on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chateau-guillaume-leconquerant.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">official website<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please note that the tour includes a lot of stairs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Trinity Church  <\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-P2XSHsf\/4\/f1ebfcd2\/L\/Falaise_normandie-7463-L.jpg\" alt=\"Church of the Trinity in Falaise\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Right next to the castle, in the main square, you&#8217;ll find a superb church with some surprising features.<br\/>A first church already existed here in 840. This church has been partially destroyed several times, so it&#8217;s made up of elements built between the 13th and 16th centuries: a Romanesque cross plan, a Gothic nave and flamboyant Gothic decorations.<br\/>Don&#8217;t miss the western porch with its ship&#8217;s bow shape. We were fascinated by this particular feature, which dates back to 1484.<br\/>And inside, admire the richly decorated choir and its chestnut vault.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening hours: Open every day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: Free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Rue du dessous de l&#8217;arche&#8221; (under the arch)<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-D7dVkLz\/4\/1e2a7c44\/L\/Eglise_Trinite_Falaise_Normandie-7538-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>At the other end of this same church, don&#8217;t miss another special feature. The ambulatory spans an alleyway, creating a tunnel.<br\/>We don&#8217;t recall seeing such a construction anywhere else so far (although it must exist).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Falaise Memorial<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-BVJ9W6c\/4\/93fa363a\/L\/Falaise_normandie-7466-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><br\/>If you&#8217;re passionate about the Second World War, this museum tells the story of the Battle of Falaise, which took place in 1944, and was one of the most important battles in the Liberation of France. It&#8217;s a good complement to all the <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-d-day-museums-normandy-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D-Day museums in Normandy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Established in 1966, the museum is housed in a former German military hospital right next to the castle. Here you&#8217;ll find a collection of objects and documents about the battle and civilian life during it, as well as testimonials from those who lived through it.<br\/>We appreciate the civilian angle, discovering bits and pieces of life during the war. Explore downtown Falaise<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1c-Chateau-Guillaume-Le-conquerant\/i-bDSqWhp\/4\/0fc81a61\/L\/Chateau_Guillaume_le_Conquerant_Falaise_normandie-7482-L.jpg\" alt=\"City of Falaise\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Falaise&#8217;s town center is charming and picturesque.  <br\/>Start in the main square at the foot of the castle, with its statue of William the Conqueror on horseback. And on the side in front of the museum, a piece of street art painted on a tank by Jef Aerosol reminds us that &#8220;war is hell&#8221;.<br\/>Then head for the old center. Almost nothing remains of the medieval period, as the town was heavily destroyed by bombing in 1944. But you can still admire the buildings that have been rebuilt, proof of efficiency and resilience in the face of tragedy.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Ante and Porte des Cordeliers<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-8bdsBTh\/4\/a4159dd3\/L\/Ante_porte_cordeliers_fortifications_Falaise_Normandie-7575-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Another of our favorite spots is the little lake on the side of the town center. It brings a bit of the countryside to the city center. It offers magnificent views of the Porte des Cordeliers, which marks the entrance to the medieval town. It dates back to the 13th century. It&#8217;s one of the few remaining structures outside the ch\u00e2teau. A fascinating feature is the staircase leading to the dwellings above.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening hours: Free access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: free of charge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. The museum of automata<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-HWzvkDf\/4\/632727f9\/L\/musee_Automates_Falaise_Normandie-7541-L.jpg\" alt=\"museum of automata\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the heart of the town, you&#8217;ll also find the Museum of Automata. It houses an exceptional collection of over 300 automata, dating from the 19th to the 20th centuries (one of the largest in the world). Saint-Gervais Church<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-qJ9gnqs\/4\/88b29d2e\/L\/eglise_Saint_gervais_Falaise_Normandie-7547-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Gervais Church\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The other fascinating church in Falaises is Saint-Gervais. It was built in the 12th century, on the orders of William the Conqueror, in Romanesque style (and finished by his son). It has, of course, been renovated several times over the centuries.<br\/>It features a three-bay nave, a transept and a choir with three apses.<br\/>The capitals of Saint-Gervais church are decorated with profane and religious sculptures, magnificent pieces of Romanesque art.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening hours: open every day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: free of charge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Ch\u00e2teau de la Fresnaye and its magnificent trees<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R1d-Falaise\/i-XvhSpFs\/4\/262b145c\/L\/Chateau_la_Fresnaye_Falaise_Normandie-7544-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>And for a change of period and style, don&#8217;t miss the Ch\u00e2teau de la Fresnaye, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries and subsequently redesigned. The ch\u00e2teau has a rare architectural feature: a 7m-deep icehouse. According to the newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/normandie\/falaise-14700\/falaise-les-tresors-du-chateau-de-la-fresnaye-5926109\">Ouest-France<\/a>, you can ask for the key at the tourist office, but we haven&#8217;t tested it yet. The ch\u00e2teau is sometimes open for exhibitions.<br\/>But you can already admire it from the outside and enjoy its large park.
