Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A visit to St. Joseph&#8217;s Church is unquestionably a must on any visit to Le Havre:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>for its <strong>contemporary architecture <\/strong>and stylistic use of <strong>reinforced concrete<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for the <strong>stained glass windows<\/strong>, particularly in the lantern tower, which brings exceptional light into the church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for <strong>the symbolic power of the site<\/strong>: 107 metres high, it is a veritable <strong>spiritual and secular beacon <\/strong>in a town that was completely destroyed in September 1944<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/normandielovers.fr\/en\/best-things-do-le-havre-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Le Havre&#8217;s must-see attractions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/i-x4CXXZK\/0\/5c1b6870\/L\/i-x4CXXZK-L.jpg\" alt=\"photo of the stained glass windows at the base and beginning of the lantern tower, flooding the church with light  \"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The luminous ambience of Saint Joseph church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s St. Joseph&#8217;s Church famous for?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. Joseph&#8217;s Church owes its renown to the reconstruction of Le Havre and its <strong>UNESCO listing <\/strong>in July 2005.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the bombings of September 1944, the reconstruction of Le Havre was entrusted to French architect <strong>Auguste Perret, <\/strong>marking the high point of his international career<strong>.<\/strong> He built a <strong>resolutely modern city<\/strong>, exploiting the full potential of his favorite material, <strong>reinforced concrete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/i-BjwwcSw\/0\/be130b10\/L\/i-BjwwcSw-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of the altar surmounted by a metal canopy surrounded by the concrete pillars supporting the lantern tower, all lit by the many stained-glass windows.\" style=\"width:703px;height:527px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Resolutely modern architecture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the context of this <strong>10-year<\/strong> project, the construction of the church is particularly symbolic. It is both a place of worship and a memorial to the Second World War, embodying the rebirth of Le Havre.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But beyond this dimension, it is also one of the <strong>masterpieces of modernism<\/strong>, revisiting religious architecture, and a technical feat. The church was destroyed by another bombing raid on <strong>September 5, 1944<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 5 days of intense bombardment, <strong>82% of the city of Le Havre was destroyed<\/strong> and 18 kilometers of the port&#8217;s docks rendered unusable. However, it is advisable to avoid the <strong>mass <\/strong> times (late Saturday and Sunday mornings). are a bold choice. Instead of traditional figurative stained-glass windows, often depicting biblical figures or scenes, we opted for a magnificent geometric combination of 12,768 colored glasses.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/i-Jc9Gn8J\/0\/3d8969eb\/L\/i-Jc9Gn8J-L.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of the interior of the lantern tower, pierced by hundreds of small coloured tiles\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Inside the lantern tower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mouth-blown, they are therefore <strong>irregular<\/strong>, both in thickness and in shade. <strong>Notre-Dame du Havre cathedral <\/strong>is less than 800 m from rue de Paris. Compared with other French cathedrals, this modest edifice blends the architectural styles of the 16th and <sup>17th<\/sup> centuries (from late flamboyant Gothic to early Classicism).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/i-rnMStCd\/0\/dfa241d8\/L\/i-rnMStCd-L.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of the choir surrounded by statues illuminated by a stained glass window\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The choir of Notre Dame Cathedral in Le Havre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although battered by the city&#8217;s various conflicts over the centuries, it is one of the few buildings that Auguste Perret didn&#8217;t completely raze to the ground during Le Havre&#8217;s post-war reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps this is why it was elevated to Cathedral status in 1974 by Pope Paul VI.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Graville Abbey<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfairly overlooked, even by the people of Le Havre, Graville Abbey boasts a<strong> magnificent Romanesque abbey church <\/strong>whose construction began in the late <sup>11th<\/sup> century. In the nave, look up to see the richly decorated column capitals.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/i-LPXKzHX\/1\/5fc405f3\/L\/i-LPXKzHX-L.jpg\" alt=\"photo of an arched stone room with religious statues\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Statutes and medieval features of Graville Abbey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church is dedicated to<strong> Sainte Honorine<\/strong>, who, according to legend, was killed by pagans in Lillebonne (35 km east of Le Havre), thrown into the Seine and washed up at the foot of the abbey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cliffside site also features a <strong>romantic cemetery<\/strong> and a collection of medieval statuary.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole thing is <strong>spellbinding<\/strong>, and we really enjoyed the belated discovery of this treasure of our city.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notre-Dame des flots chapel<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in the hills above Sainte-Adresse, this <strong>adorable little<\/strong> Gothic-style <strong>chapel<\/strong> was built in 1859.
