Known for its <strong>memorial<\/strong> and <strong>ch\u00e2teau<\/strong>, Caen is home to architectural treasures spared by the Allied bombing raids of 1944. We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices, and paying all our bills in full. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Caen worth visiting?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Caen, Normandy&#8217;s main student city, is well worth a visit for several reasons. First of all, it&#8217;s a metropolis on a human scale, where it&#8217;s pleasant to stroll around. The lively town center is home to many shops and excellent restaurants. You&#8217;re sure to fall for the charm of these half-timbered houses, just as we did.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Normandie\/R20g-Caen\/i-ctDMcG2\/4\/b60c0c06\/L\/caen_Normandie-4692-L.jpg\" alt=\"Detail view of half-timbered house.  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But Caen is most famous for its history. Such is the case of the tourist office, which is housed in a Renaissance mansion known as the &#8220;H\u00f4tel d&#8217;Escoville&#8221;.
